Culinary Class Wars, a South Korean cooking competition show on Netflix is unique in its own right as the show opens with 100 contestants. The Opening shot of the show lays down the marker:

“Here, 100 chefs have gathered today in hopes of becoming the best chef in Korea.”

Headed by producers Kim Hakmin and Kim Eunji, Culinary Class Wars takes the whole cooking competition game to a new and unfathomable level. There are 100 contestants and 80 of them are ‘Black Spoon Chefs’ as they are not famous (yet) and 20 of them are famous chefs, called ‘White Spoon Chefs’.

The sheer number of participants might make one's head spin. The unknown chefs are introduced to the audience in rapid succession with their nicknames. It would take at least a few episodes to get used to the format of the show and know each chef by their name and specialty.

How does Culinary Class Wars work?

youtube-cover

Culinary Class Wars makes non-famous chefs compete with famous and established ones. The concept is as interesting and intriguing as it sounds and because of the visible disparity between the competitors, the tensions remain at an all-time high.

The 80 non-famous chefs are divided into two groups of 40 chefs who have to create their best dishes in 100 minutes. Three-star Michelin chef Anh Sung-jae and restaurateur Paik Jong-won are the judges who take 20 chefs each under their wing.

Once they are done with tasting the dishes, the judges will either eliminate the chef, or move them up, and can even put them in a state of limbo. Once we have 20 chefs who have been moved up in the game, the first round is over.

While the initial episodes might seem a little confusing and the viewers might have to wait for a significant time to see the non-famous chefs get to cooking, Culinary Class Wars does get interesting as it proceeds.

With its highly unconventional premise and intriguing way of combining competitors, the show should be fun to watch as more episodes drop.
