Countdown Episode 4 is now here, and viewers just got to witness another round of intense action and drama, not to mention all the twists. As it appears, things are not getting any easier for Nathan Blythe's task force despite a planned approach.
In Episode 3, we had seen Mark going on an undercover mission (at a restaurant owned by Timur's uncle, Mikhail Durko) to extract information on Durko's connections to Volchek, and as things go awry, his team appears at the scene for backup. However, FBI Agent Damon Drew takes the hit for his team during the nerve-wracking gunfight.
The opening scenes of Countdown Episode 4 take us through the emotional turmoil of the ER as Mark and his associates rush Drew to the hospital, but unfortunately, he passes away in surgery.
Nathan Blythe, struck by the untimely loss of his friend and colleague, gets hell bent on unearthing any potential connections to Durko and Volchek. However, our Belarusian antagonist/terrorist already has a plan in place to fool the federal officers.

Damon Drew does not make it out of surgery in Countdown Episode 4
In Countdown Episode 4, Agent Drew gets rushed to the ER after he is hit with a bullet in the earlier face-off, and Mark Meachum is seen standing by him all the way to the hospital.
However, in a sad turn of events, the surgeon is seen talking to Blythe, and within a few minutes into Episode 4, Drew is declared dead. Special Agent Evan Shepherd accompanies Blythe to deliver the tragic news to Cora, Drew's wife, who is shattered by the simultaneous losses of her son and her husband.
On the other hand, Mark is seen reflecting on his decisions in the undercover assignment and blames himself for his reckless modus operandi. However, Oliveras, with her kind words, is able to convince him that it was not his fault and that he needs to move past these things to focus on the bigger task: catching Volchek.
Mark's undercover mission does bring some solid leads in the investigation, and a new name emerges in Countdown Episode 4
Mark's undercover mission to the restaurant that Timur's uncle owned brings a lot of things to light, and as it appears, it is a major breakthrough in the investigation so far. The secret room in the basement of the restaurant had flyers all over the wall, a map of the LA port, papers and documents lying around, and there was one name that Meachum could spot—Gallagher.
Though it's initially not clear how it connects to Volcheck, thanks to Evan's tech skills, thorough research, and presence of mind, the name of the owner of the restaurant (where the shootout took place) comes to light. His name is Mikhail Durko, a Belarusian living in the US, and the restaurant (in whose secret room Volchek was hiding) belongs to him.
With further research, the task force manages to get Mikhail's house location and arrives at the spot to make an arrest. However, it seems like he has already fled the scene, and his wife was ready for an escape (in case the forces came in). But thanks to Meachum's presence of mind, they are able to catch her.
The task force gets in contact with Mikhail with the help of his wife (breaking her was quite the cakewalk for them), and eventually, the Belarusian gets caught. Mikhail appears as a tough nut to crack, so the team investigates further and gets in touch with one of his cousins—a man named Dmitri, who is also a person of interest. Evan also does some more digging and finds out about his secret child (thanks to Oliveras's subtle drug planting skills, which she and Mark are able to coerce Dmitri to spill information).
She takes charge of the interrogation room (over from Meachum and Oliveras) and uses the emotional tool to make Mikhail speak. And as we see in Countdown Episode 4, he breaks easily when it comes to the ones he loves, especially his daughter Anya.
DA Valwell's unprecedented move in Countdown Episode 4 puts his ambiguous character arc even more in perspective
As we have seen from the very beginning of Countdown, District Attorney Valwell has been lurking around the corner to include himself in the task force's investigation. However, Blythe is strictly against even the smallest information going out of the department, and so he has always kept repelling Valwell away.
Thus, the DA takes matters to another level and initiates the transfer of two LAPD officers in the task force (Mark and Luke) to in-office work by using his connections inside the department. It appears that Valwell wants to get into the case by hook or crook, and his latest move further justifies his ambiguous character. Does he actually want to help, or does he have other intentions (which, to be honest, will be a bit obvious)? Only time will tell.
The task force plans to trap Volchek with the help of Mikhail in Countdown Episode 4, but the former is one step ahead of them
Once Mikhail speaks, he is asked (by the task force) to set up a meeting with Volchek. Mikhail and Volchek have a secret code of communication (leaving visual messages using colors in public), and using it, the former reaches out to our antagonist. As Mikhail says in Countdown Episode 4:
"Green lets him know I have information and I'll be at Van Nuys Airport at 8:00 pm. He'll meet me there."
Thus, the rendezvous is set as mentioned, and the task force gears up for making their final move. However, the Belarusian terrorist is one step ahead of them and had already spied when Mikhail was leaving coded messages in public.
So, when a regular pilot turns up at the designated spot, Nathan Blythe and his team realize they have been fooled by Volchek. Countdown Episode 4 concludes on a rather heartwarming note inside the headquarters as Blythe delivers a speech to the task force about investigations having their own "peaks and valleys."
Moments later, Drew's wife, Cora, appears at the scene and requests the team to move past the setbacks. She also mentions how Damon would go to any length to protect his nation like a true officer and expects the others to do the same. The final scene of Countdown Episode 4 portrays Nathan Blythe putting up a memento with Damon's name etched on it - a symbol of his irreplaceable service to the department.
