The Harry Potter show has a chance to pull off something meta: Cast X-Men and Superman actor Nicholas Hoult in the HBO series. That's because Hoult had auditioned for the role of The Boy Who Lived in the late 90s, for the first movie in the film franchise. However, Hoult lost the role to Daniel Radcliffe, who played the titular hero in all eight Harry Potter movies.

Furthermore, apart from the titular character, Hoult came very close to playing different characters throughout the entire run of the film franchise, but he never appeared in any Harry Potter movie. This is something the actor addressed during his appearance in the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast in November 2024. When the podcast host Josh Horowitz asked Hoult if the latter was ready to join the series, he humorously replied:

"I think I can probably play 11 still. I just walk in with some glasses and a scar on my head and be like, 'Hey what's up?' I'm ready."

Now, Hoult's history with the Potter franchise was something that was brought up on the TODAY Show. This time, though, Hoult's answer was a bit more diplomatic.

What did Hoult say about appearing in the Harry Potter show?

Hoult appeared for an interview with the TODAY Show on Monday, June 30, 2025, to promote Superman. In that interview, after Hoult revealed the unique way in which he won the role of Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luthor, the interviewer asked about Hoult's past with the Harry Potter film franchise. When asked if the actor was interested in joining the Harry Potter HBO series in a different role, Hoult's response was:

“I love Mark [Mark Mylod] as a director and I love those stories. I think I’m a little bit too old to play Harry now, though."

If you notice the quote above, you can ascertain that this statement is laced with uncertainty while simultaneously expressing affinity towards the seven books.

HBO decided to move ahead with the adaptation of the seven books. First announced in April 2023, casting for the show wasn't officially confirmed until this, when John Lithgow was officially the first actor to join the series. After him, several new members joined the cast, but one thing is clear: The casting for the series was difficult, to put it mildly.
