The popular supernatural drama, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, premiered in 1997 and was one of the most beloved shows of the early 2000s with a female lead. The show followed Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers, a reluctant slayer who initially wanted to live a normal life but gradually accepted her fate of being someone who protects the world by slaying otherworldly creatures.

Eventually, many new people from Sunnydale High join her in the fight against evil. They form the famous Scooby Gang. Throughout the series, many people came to Buffy’s aid to help her fight, and with good people, the show also introduced numerous scary creatures. From poltergeists, demons, and terrifying clowns, Buffy the Vampire Slayer depicted many disturbing and spine-chilling monsters and other creatures bound to haunt you.

10) Hans and Gretta Strauss

Appeared in episode 11 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s season 3, titled Gingerbread, Buffy’s mom, Joyce, encounters the bodies of the two children named Hans and Greta, with mysterious symbols on their hands. Later, Buffy and the Scooby gang discover that this is actually a demon who appears every 50 years to trick people into killing young women who appear to be witches.

Although never named, the terrifying demon almost succeeds in killing Buffy and her friends, burned alive by Joyce and other parents, making it one of the most terrifying creatures on the supernatural series.


9) Killer Clown

What’s more terrifying than encountering frightening moments from childhood, including monsters and clowns from your nightmares? In this season 1 episode 10, titled Nightmares, due to Billy's coma, the Scooby gang experiences their worst nightmares in front of them.

For instance, Xander is followed by a knife-wielding clown who was present during his sixth birthday and terrifies him, until he gains the courage to face him and punches him hard. While demons and evil spirits might be terrifying, knife-wielding clowns are a different level of terror for many people.


8) Gill monster

The Gill monster appeared in episode 20 of season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled, Go Fish. The swim team becoming the gill monster by leaving just their human skin behind was one of the most frightening episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

All of that happened because of coach Marin, who exposed the team to dangerous Soviet drugs. Although they improved team performance, the overexposure turned them into these deadly monsters. The monsters happened to be more terrifying as they searched for human flesh to eat, and also ate Marin and Nurse Greenliegh.


7) Inca Princess

In the season 2 episode 4 titled, Inca Mummy Girl, the scoobies get under the enchantment of a 500 year old mummy who sucks the life out of people to be alive. After Buffy discovers the real identity of the Inca princess posing as Ampata, she and Giles try to stop her from killing more people.

At the end, as Xander almost sacrificed himself to save Willow, Buffy pulls Ampata away from kissing Xander, changing her into her true form.


6) Zachary Kralik

A criminal turning into an otherworldly creature with evil powers might be the most dreadful thing happening. In episode 12 of season 3, titled, Helpless, a serial killer named Zachary Kralik is introduced, who later became a vampire.

In the episode, before Buffy’s Tento di Cruciamentum, she is drained of her power and is supposed to be put in a chamber with Kralik, now a vampire, to fight and defeat him with only her wits, as she is in a weakened state. However, Kralik escapes and kidnaps Joyce to lure Buffy, who later tricks him into drinking holy water that kills him. Although Buffy killed the vampire, Kralik was one of the most terrifying creatures from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who even had a terrifying past as a human being.


5) Gnarl

This dreadful demon appeared in episode 3 of season 7, titled Same Time, Same Place, and resided in the caves of Wilken’s Grove. Gnarl was a horrifying demon that left its victims’ skinless corpses after killing them.

Other than that, the Gnarl also attacked Willow when she was trapped in the cave with it by taunting her and slicing her abdomen while also slicing her skin little by little to eat, making it painful for Willow. Therefore, the Gnarl might be one of the most terrifying creatures from the supernatural series due to its slow, painful, and torturous technique of killing its victims.


4) Queller Demon

Gnarl wasn’t the only terrifying demon appearing in the supernatural series. Before that, another demon known as Queller appeared in season 5, episode 9, titled, Listening to Fear. Known as the extraterrestrial demon, Ben summoned one of these demons to get rid of the mental patients.

Due to their ability to live in the vacuum, these demons posed a greater threat as they could stick to walls and choke their victims to death by spitting some gooey element on them. These crawling and agile demons even tried to attack Buffy’s mother till she saved her by killing the demon.


3) The Gentlemen

The humanoids were introduced in season 4, episode 10 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled, Hush. These bald men came to the town and stole all the voices, rendering them unable to speak.

To collect seven hearts, they roamed from one town to the other, stealing voices from the town people, resulting in forced silence, making them one of the most terrifying creatures introduced in the supernatural drama.


2) Der Kindestod

Kindstod is one of the most terrifying creatures in the supernatural series due to its predation on young children. It kills children by draining the life out of them. This makes it appear as though they died from fever, complicating the investigation into whether or not they were murdered.

In season 2, episode 18, titled "Killed by Death," Buffy encounters a Kindestod in the hospital that is feeding on sick children and also kills Dr. Stanley Backer, who is trying to help those children. In the end, Buffy saves the children, but Der Kindestod remains one of the most mysterious and frightening creatures featured in the series.


1) Bezoar and its offspring

The parasitic demon Bezoar appeared in season 2, episode 12 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled, Bad Eggs as it takes over Sunnydale High’s teacher, Mr. Whitmore. Whitmore distributed Bezoar’s eggs to all the students to teach them about parenting.

However, the eggs hatched, and the Bezoar’s offspring controlled the students who had them. They drained energy out of the students, making them weaker, and also drained life out of their hosts. The Bezoar could even ingest humans and other creatures like vampires, making it one of the most terrifying creatures in the series.
