CBS' NCIS: Origins, the first prequel to the network's longest-running procedural NCIS, recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its first table read.
While NCIS's popularity has paved the way for many spin-offs, Origins was truly special as it featured the prequel story of one of the main characters of the parent series, Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Mark Harmon has played the character to perfection in the parent series, and the baton was passed to actor Austin Stowell, who plays a young Gibbs in NCIS: Origins. In addition, Harmon also returned to act as a narrator on the spin-off series, much to fans' delight.
To mark this first anniversary, the show's social media account posted a special video, featuring all the cast gearing up for their first table read.
More on this in our story.
Fans get a sneak peek at NCIS: Origins' first table read as the show turns one
To celebrate NCIS: Origins' first anniversary, fans were surprised with the show's first-ever table read with all the cast, writers, and network executives. The creative energy in the room is palpable from the video itself as actors Austin Stowell and Caleb Foote pan the camera around the room.
The video then features the cast's first table read, which begins with all the actors introducing themselves and their characters in NCIS: Origins. Actor Kyle Schmid begins the reading as his character, Mike Franks, was the first one to be introduced in the spin-off series.
Fans can truly feel the excitement and weight of the moment as Stowell introduces himself as Jeroy Lethro Gibbs, one of the most iconic characters in the procedural world now. Mark Harmon's flawless portrayal paved the way for the character's popularity, and the spin-off naturally banked on it.
The video is a welcome reminder that despite some big shoes to fill, NCIS: Origins has kept its predecessors' legacy, even earning a Season 2 renewal. In addition, Origins became the first-ever character-driven series from the universe, focusing on Gibb's origin story.
NCIS: Origins is confirmed for Season 2
While Harmon exited NCIS, fans were clearly not over Leroy Jethro Gibbs and showered the same love on Stowell's young Gibbs, earning the show a Season 2 renewal.
The spin-off series was renewed for a sophomore season in February 2025 and will likely be released under CBS's 2025 Fall schedule. While additional details about the casting are not revealed yet, the main characters are expected to return in Season 2, which includes Stowell and Schmid.
Season 1 saw Gibbs begin his career at Camp Pendleton in 1991 under Franks' mentorship and also provided context to many storylines of the parent series. With the emotional burden of carrying the weight of the murder of his wife and daughter, Gibbs will become a more experienced and sure agent as the seasons progress.
Season 2 will likely be a stepping stone in establishing Gibbs' lore, as he becomes the fierce leader fans saw in NCIS.
