After receiving immense commendation for Deon Cole's portrayal of Joe Washington, BET+ has greenlit Average Joe Season 2. The dark comedy will likely bring back the serving characters from season 1.
Filming and production of Average Joe Season 2 will begin in the fall of 2024 and will be released next year. The first season followed how a blue-collar worker, Joe, got trapped in unordinary situations after his deceased father's secret life was exposed.
Joe Washington led an everyday life, working as a plumber and living with his small family. However, their world turned upside down after Joe found out that his father was a dr*g mule who had allegedly stolen a whopping $10 million and a stunning red Lamborghini from a Russian gangster named Nicolai Dzhugashvili.
Throughout the ten episodes of Average Joe's first season, Joe and his friends face deadly encounters that lead to the death of the mob's son and many of his henchmen. Season 1 features dark comedy and intense manslaughter and ends with significant cliffhangers.
Average Joe Season 2 will likely continue from where the story ended in the final episodes, exploring the fate of Cathy and the aftermath of killing the Russian mob.
What to expect from Average Joe Season 2?
Average Joe Season 1 ended with major cliffhangers revolving around Cathy's fate, Joe's future, and Angela's decision to move out of Joe's life. These incidents perfectly set the stage for season 2, which is expected to reveal whether Cathy survived the gunshot and the aftermath of killing Nicolai.
Season 2 might also reveal where Angela took her daughter as she left a note for Joe, explaining that she cannot stay with him any longer as the mob almost killed Jennifer.
Since Joe is alone, and his close friends are also suffering, these cliffhangers can be resolved in the upcoming season.
When will Average Joe Season 2 come out?
Since the filming of Average Joe Season 2 will begin in the fall of 2024, the series' release is expected sometime in 2025. The exact release date is yet to be announced, but it will hit BET+ first.
Who are the cast members of Average Joe Season 2?
The next season will undeniably bring back the titular character, Joe Washington, played by Deon Cole. Since the first chapter ended with cliffhangers, it's unknown whether Cynthia McWilliams's Cathy Montgomery will return in Average Joe Season 2.
Notable cast members who played a crucial part in Average Joe Season 1 include:
- Tammy Townsend as Angela Washington
- Malcolm Barrett as Leon Montgomery
- Michael Trucco as Benjamin "Touch" Tuchawuski
- Pasha D. Lychnikoff as Nicolai Dzhugashvili
What happened in Average Joe Season 1?
The show began with Joe discovering his father's secret life which ultimately introduced Joe, his family, and friends to the underworld. They went from being average workers to killing one or two henchmen of the Russian mob to save themselves.
In the last episodes of season 1, Joe finally confronts Nicolai after finding his hideout and kills him. On the other side, Cathy and her husband Leon were trying to make huge money by selling dr*gs, but an encounter with a ruthless dealer resulted in Cathy being shot.
This leads Leon to kill one of the dealers, who is later revealed to be an undercover cop. However, the finale does not feature what happened to Cathy and the aftermath of killing the Russian gangster. These cliffhangers are expected to be solved in the upcoming season of Average Joe.
Where will Average Joe Season 2 filming take place?
Deon Cole's hit Average Joe Season 1 was filmed around Atlanta, Georgia. Though it's set in The Hill district of Pittsburgh, filming occurred in Westside Stageworks, almost 20 miles West of Central Atlanta.
The location allowed the makers to film various scenes differently without entirely changing the location. Since Average Joe is an intensely dark comedy show, it focuses on family dynamics and how an average blue-collar worker handled the murders he did with his friends.
Following the success of season 1, Average Joe Season 2 will be filmed in South Africa instead of Atlanta, Georgia. Per The Atlanta Journal Constitution, the line producer of Average Joe reflected on the creative decision for season 2 and said:
"As part of the story, we planned to go international with the second season. South Africa presented the perfect opportunity."
Average Joe is inspired by its creator, Robb Cullen's life. As shared on the BET+ website, Cullen remained "tight-lipped about the specific details" of his show, igniting curiosity among fans and viewers about what happened in his real life.
