Nagiko Tono is a 45-year-old Japanese actress from the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan, best known for her appearances in Sea Watches (2001), Darkness in the Light (2001), and TV dramas including Attack No.1, Sweet 10, Legal High 2, and Daughter of Lupin. Tono made her acting debut at 6.
A decomposed body was found earlier this week in the home of the actress by Tokyo Metropolitan Police, as per Tokyo Sports.
On the evening of July 3, fire engines and ambulances were seen parked in front of Nagiko Tono's Tokyo apartment. The officials were seen breaking the glass to enter the apartment. A man in his 40s who lives in the same apartment, while talking to local news outlets, said:
"Yesterday evening, fire engines and ambulances gathered one after another in front of the apartment. Then I heard a 'crash' sound. I wondered what had happened, and when I went to check, I was told that a firefighter had broken the window glass and entered Tono's home. I have seen her several times before, and she looked very thin and listless." (translated from Japanese)
A police source said:
"An acquaintance who could not contact Tono went to look at the residence. It seems that the body was sent for a DNA test because it was so badly decomposed that it was unclear whether it was her. It will likely take some time for the identification."
Her former manager mentioned that the Japanese entertainment industry was concerned for Tono for her "strange behavior" after she opened up about depression and feeling suicidal in her recent social media posts. The manager also mentioned that the actress was not affiliated with any agency, and that her Instagram is her "point of contact."
More about Nagiko Tono's cryptic posts
Japanese actress Nagiko Tono had opened up about her mental health in public several times. Her most recent blog post was on June 27, where she can be seen cooking chicken in a frying pan. In the video, Nagiko says:
"Good evening. This is Tono Nagiko. I'm making teriyaki chicken thighs right now," she said, "I actually wanted to add honey, but the jar cap won't open... I guess I'll just use sugar. What can I do?" (translated from Japanese)
Her post came a day after the actress, on June 26, confessed to "suffering from depression." The actress in a previous interview had said, "I can become empty," and has been vocal about battling child abuse and eating disorders in her childhood.
