Togolese footballer Samuel Asamoah hurt his neck during a match in China on October 5. The incident happened after he came into collision with an advertising board on the side of a pitch. However, according to a report by National World, it is speculated that the injury could lead to paralysis.

The report mentioned that the display board was placed as per the protocols. However, opposition player Zhang Zhixiong was given a yellow card.

Samuel Asamoah is a midfielder for the Chinese football team Guangxi Pingguo. The team shared a statement saying that he had to undergo surgery after enduring a fracture and neural damage. They also speculated:

“He is at risk of high-level paraplegia and will miss all remaining games this season. His career may also be seriously affected.”

Doctors found that Asamoah had serious injuries in his neck. They said several bones from the C2 to C6 area were out of place and broken, and there was also a compression fracture between the C5 and C6 bones. In a follow-up statement on October 8, the team updated that Asamoah’s surgery went well. They noted:

“Guangxi Pingguo FC sincerely thanks all fans and all walks of life for their concern and support for Samuel Asamoah. His recovery progress will be announced in due course after follow-up examinations.”

Meanwhile, the referee committee of the Chinese Football Association sat down to look into the matter after the incident. They noted that although Zhang Zhixiong’s performance was reckless, he did not deserve a red card, as his conduct was not violent.
