Candace Owens recently shared a statement about trying to use an alleged short sample of Ye fka Kanye West for a podcast intro. Her statement is drawing notable reactions across social media platforms.

Candace Owens claimed that she wanted a few seconds of Ye's voice but was told she would have to allegedly pay $40,000 to license it. She also stated that the figure was later increased.

Candace Owens took to her official X (formerly Twitter) page to share that,

"The problem is that all of Ye's old music is owned by masters. He and I discussed how genius it was that Taylor Swift rerecorded hers and how he has been wanting to make time to do the same but he has not yet done it and I have this really amazing new intro I want to premiere but I would have to pay Universal $40,000 to sample just 7 seconds of Kanye's voice."

Candace Owens later updated,

"Update: my husband told me universal actually wants me to pay 100k for what will ultimately be 24 minutes of Ye's voice, annually. I spiritually cannot do it."

Netizens reacted to her post, saying,

"That is outrageous and should be illegal but that is how they capture all these artists. It is very sad to see. 🙏"

Candace Owens said that she did not want to pay a record company for music made by an artist who has been allegedly mistreated by the industry. She claimed that she had reached out to Ye last year.

Ye's older music is still allegedly owned by record labels, which means any use would require licensing. She said they discussed the idea of rerecording masters but said Ye had not yet had time to do so.

Reports suggest that under the current copyright law, recorded music is owned by whoever holds the master recordings. Even if an artist wrote and performed the song, the label controls how it can be used. Sampling requires permission and a licensing fee.

It is worth noting that Candace Owens' post did not include documentation of the figures she shared. However, according to reports, the amounts she mentioned are not unheard of in commercial licensing.
