"Okay, the name is kind of dumb because my brother came up with it, and I’ll blame him for that. Originally, when I was doing YouTube, I wanted to make sketch comedy videos where I played all the characters. My name is Mark, and I would multiply myself."

He combined the word and his name:

"Multiplier, Mark, Markiplier."

Later on, the change in his content did not make sense with the original name, but Fischbach kept it as it was. He said:

"Then I started making gaming videos, and the name didn’t really make sense anymore, but I just stuck with it."
