Gracie Abrams recently admitted she feels nervous when asked about the bridge section in her song "That’s So True." She shared this during a Story of My Song feature with American Express. The song appears on the deluxe edition of her 2024 album, The Secret of Us, and the bridge became a focus for many fans when it went viral online.

Abrams said she would "dissect" the bridge, meaning explain it, but she also made clear she has limits on how much she will reveal. She refused to share names or too many personal details.

Why is Gracie Abrams "Scared" to talk about the Bridge?

When Gracie Abrams came to discussing the bridge, she laughed and admitted,

"I feel … scared to talk about the bridge. We’ll get there."

She sang lines from the bridge in her feature:

“Made it out alive, but I think I lost it / Said that I was fine, said it from my coffin / Remember how I died when you started walking? / That’s my life, that’s my life / … / Don’t you know the vibe? Don’t you know the feeling? / And she’ll spend the night, catch me on your ceiling / That’s your price, that’s your price.”

Those lines already led many to read into the emotional pain behind them. The fact that Gracie Abrams hesitated suggests the bridge may carry heavy personal meaning for her. Abrams said she would "dissect" or break down how she wrote it. But she drew a line; she will not share the names of the people she wrote about. She said,

"I would never say the names of the people that the song's about, for example, but I think, you know, I actually ... I don't have any problem standing here being like, yes I wrote this about a relationship that I was involved in."

She added that anyone she has written about already knows she is a songwriter. She tries to be "respectful" of people’s experiences. She said,

"There's just a way to make someone aware when you've done it if it's gonna see the light of day, for example. Enough consideration to be respectful of XYZ person in their personal life and experiences."

At one point, she said the person behind the song is "fine," meaning she does not believe her honesty has harmed them. "They’re all good," she said. So her fear seems not about denying the inspiration, but about how much she should say out loud.

Who inspired the bridge and Gracie Abrams's song?

Gracie Abrams confirmed that the song, including the bridge, is about a real relationship she once had. But she would not name the person. She described writing with her friend and collaborator, Audrey Hobert. The two co-wrote "That’s So True."

In an earlier piece, an NBC Insider explained that Abrams and Hobert become very emotionally involved when writing bridges. Abrams has said she loves writing bridges because they allow her to intensify feelings. The rest of the song grapples with heartbreak, moving on, regret, and self-reflection. It fits the theme of a relationship ending and the emotional fallout. That's So True is one of Abrams’s biggest hits so far. It became viral on social media, and it topped some radio charts.

So when she says she’s "scared," it’s not because she doubts the song, as it's already out and doing very well. Instead, the bridge is a deeply personal piece tied to real feelings and memories. By not naming the person, Gracie Abrams keeps control over how much of her life she shares. She demonstrates that she can own the emotional truth while maintaining her boundaries.
