How did Halsey address pregnancy during the release of the IICHLIWP album cover in 2021?
During the release of the If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (IICHLIWP) album cover in 2021, Halsey addressed pregnancy in a bold and transformative way.
They shared the cover on their Instagram account, while reflecting on the “joys and horrors” of pregnancy, and wrote:
“This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It was very important to me that the cover art conveyed the sentiment of my journey over the past few months. The dichotomy of the Madonna and the Whore.”
Halsey added:
“The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many different ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being.”
The 30-year-old concluded their post by adding that the cover image celebrates pregnant and postpartum bodies of women. They said that it helps eradicate the social stigma surrounding bodies and breastfeeding.
In July 2021, Halsey welcomed their first child with then-boyfriend Alev Aydin. The two were spotted in public in 2019 for the first time while attending a Los Angeles Lakers game.
In January 2021, Halsey announced that they are expecting a child through a series of maternity photos on Instagram. They welcomed a son in July 2021.
A BBC report indicated that Halsey shared a health update in 2022, revealing to their fans that they had been "hospitalised for anaphylaxis a few times". They wrote –
“My health has changed a lot since I got pregnant and gave birth. I started getting really sick, I've been kind of sick most of my adult life. I'm still looking for the root cause of some of these things.”
Halsey also spoke about suffering from endometriosis, which is a disease in which cells similar to the lining of the uterus grow outside the uterus, as per Mayo Clinic.
