Rapper and actor LL Cool J has stepped back from his July 4, 2025, concert on the Parkway at the Art Museum. This was part of the WAWA Welcome concert. According to FOX 29 Philadelphia, he said he wouldn’t perform unless a deal is put in place regarding the DC 33 strike.

For the unversed, the Municipal Workers Union in Philadelphia called the strike on July 1, 2025. It saw many sanitation workers, mechanics, and other blue-collar workers walking away from their jobs. Workers cited low wages and insufficient pension and health benefits as reasons for the strike.

On July 3, 2025, LL Cool J shared a self-recorded video on Instagram, saying:

“I understand there’s a lot going on in Philadelphia right now. I never ever want to disappoint my fans, especially in Philadelphia. You all mean too much to me but there’s absolutely no way that I could perform, cross a picking line, pick up money, when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage.”

LL Cool J went on:

“I am not doing that. I have been coming to Philly my whole life. You know, I have respect for the city. You know what I am saying, of course. And I hope the Mayor and the city can make a deal. I hope it works out. I am still going to come to Philly in case it works out. I am going to be in town, you all. But I am just letting you know I am not going to cross a picket line and perform for money when people are hurting.”

What did the Mayor say in response to LL Cool J’s statement?

After the singer’s declaration, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker released a statement saying she was aware of the singer’s decision. Parker added that she spoke with him and respected his decision. She acknowledged his desire to see everyone in unity. Nevertheless, she added that the singer was always welcome in Philadelphia.

In other news, District Council 33 President Greg Boulware spoke highly of LL Cool J’s decision about the concert. He mentioned:

“LL Cool J's decision to stand in solidarity with the labor movement by choosing not to cross a picket line is a powerful testament to his respect for workers' rights. His actions highlight the importance of supporting those who strive for fair treatment and better working conditions.”

The statement went on:

“By prioritizing the dignity and respect of laborers over potential fan disappointment, LL Cool J sends a strong message about the value of unity and collective action.”

He said it underscored the importance of fairness and justice in the workplace. He also shared that they were thankful for the singer’s strong support because it helped highlight workers’ struggles to a broader audience.

According to FOX 29, the singer was expected to perform at the pro bono concert at Ben Franklin Parkway, along with Jazmine Sullivan and JoJo.
