Lorde is back in the music game with a new single that will reportedly be out soon.

New Zealand singer Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, better known by her stage name Lorde, has just announced her new single after 4 years. The song, titled What Was That was first teased through a TikTok video that the artist posted last week. The 15-second video shows the singer marching across New York City's Washington Square Park wearing a white button-down, baggy jeans, a silver chain-link belt, and headphones.

The audio revealed a snippet of the lyrics which are:

"Since I was 17, I gave you everything / Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that?/ What was that?"

The song was announced through her Instagram account with the caption,

"My new song What Was That. Out soon."

Just before this, her official website and Instagram account had also gone blank. This is the track the singer is releasing after her last album, Solar Power, however, she did feature on Charlie XCX's track Girl, so confusing from her album Brat last year. In fact, Lorde also joined the English singer on stage at her Coachella set this weekend, much to the fan's delight.

The Royals singer also has a habit of releasing music in 4-year intervals, with Pure Heroine in 2013, followed by Melodrama in 2017, her third album, Solar Power, in 2021, and now her reported fourth album in 2025.

Fans react to Lorde's new song

Ever since she dropped the snippet of her song, fans have been buzzing all over the internet in anticipation of some kind of announcement. And now that she has officially declared her comeback, to say fans are excited would be an understatement.

"THE REAL ARTIST ABOUT TO SHOW WHAT REAL MUSIC IS!!!"
"She’s coming to save music thank you my queen,"- one fan states.
Another commented,- "The internet is going wild. I can't wait to hear her new song and her long-awaited fourth album."
One fan even said,"LORDE SUMMER IS COMING!" referring to last year's brat summer.
While one fan perfectly described the vibe,- "The title already sounds like a heartbreak anthem lorde never misses can’t wait to cry and vibe at the same time."

In the breadcrumbs that the singer shared leading up to this, it seems that she is working with producer Jim-E Stack, who has worked with names like Gracie Abrams, Dominic Fike, and more. An official release date has not been announced yet.
