Perrie Edwards is opening up about the impact of her first high-profile romance.

The Little Mix singer spoke candidly on the We Need to Talk podcast about her four-year relationship with former One Direction star Zayn Malik, which lasted from 2011 to 2015.

Perrie Edwards recalled on the show's August 19 episode:

“Meeting someone at that time in your career, who's kind of at the same point, is refreshing. ‘Cause it's like, 'Oh, you get it. We kind of get each other. We've got this like same kind of thing going on.' And it kind of just worked and maybe we clicked from that. It was pretty easy at first.”

Still, the Love Me Like You hitmaker acknowledged that the relationship became "difficult" as the years went on. Looking back, the singer noted how her perspective was shaped by being young and in love.

"At the time, I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal because it was my first relationship, first love. I was like, 'Oh, this is how it's supposed to feel. It's supposed to feel a little bit toxic in some ways. This is probably normal, right?'"

She went on:

“And then when I became single, I was almost thinking, like, ‘I never, ever want to go through that again.’ I didn’t even want to meet anybody."

Perrie Edwards didn’t hold back, calling the heartache “grim” before adding:

“I remember thinking, ‘I’m done with men forever.’”

Perrie Edwards reflects on past with Zayn Malik: "I felt embarrassed. I felt weird."

Perrie Edwards also confessed that her 2015 split from Zayn Malik “followed her like a bad smell,” with headlines that lingered for months and only rubbed salt in the wound.

"I felt embarrassed. I felt weird. Really sad. Going through all these emotions and going through it with everyone staring at me was like, it was mortifying."

She added that her fellow Little Mix members — Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson — were the ones who supported her through those tough times.

Despite learning from her heartbreaking experience, Perrie Edwards disclosed that it also impacted her relationship with her current partner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, at the beginning of their romance.

“Reflecting back, I’m thinking, ‘Oh, that probably wasn’t good.’ And I’ve noticed it a lot. Like in the start of the relationship, I would handle things differently with Alex, and he’d come at it with such a level head that it would throw me.”

But through time, she learned to trust Chamberlain. The couple welcomed their firstborn Axel in 2021 and got engaged in 2022.

“He’s very mature. He’s very laid back. He’s very levelheaded. He’s not the type to get mad or get angry or get funny about things.”
