13 long years later, George R.R. Martin finally made an announcement regarding The Winds of Winter. But don't get your hopes up yet—he essentially said it's not going to arrive anytime soon. Yes, you read that correctly. If you're eagerly anticipating getting hold of the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, well, you might as well wait until the universe ends. Or something like that.
In a recent update on his Not a Blog, George R.R. Martin wrote:
"Something else is going to be happening on April 8 as well. (Or maybe on April 9). No, I am not announcing the completion of THE WINDS OF WINTER, the sixth volume of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. Please don’t start any rumors to that effect."
"I am so tired of having to issue denials every time some offhand comment of mine, most having nothing to do with WINDS, somehow convinces half the internet that the book is imminent. It’s not. No. (Maybe I need to stop making offhand comments)."
George R.R. Martin admits he's tired of the internet distorting his random statement into misinformation that The Winds of Winter is coming soon. But George, we are tired too.
Your direwolves are literally coming back from a real extinction, and yet, years on, we still don't have a book.
At some point in this interminable wait, we all deluded ourselves that we love story-building—but what, precisely, are you building?
Has A Song of Ice and Fire frozen into a block of ice or been reduced to ashes? What went wrong?
You can only imagine the wild theories, jokes, and good-natured shots the internet is tossing around. Now, we understand—everyone's tired of the waiting. But social media? Oh no, they're not letting this slide.
The memes and side-splitting remarks are pouring in in full swing.
Fans poke fun at George R.R. Martin’s latest The Winds of Winter update
Fans couldn't help but tease the situation, taunting that direwolves actually returned from extinction before George R.R. Martin could even get through one book.
Others are completely sure he's got himself in the worst case of writer's block—and that The Winds of Winter may just never arrive.
A user, @RushBaby1980, poked fun, saying:
"The dire wolf came back from extinction before WoW got finished :/"
Another user, @rgfray1, added:
"Dire wolves coming out of extinction before we get GRRM’s next book is comedy gold."
One user, @MDUmairKh, mentioned:
"At this point, I'm convinced that he's suffering from writer's block."
Fans couldn't help but giggle at the way George R.R. Martin built up an "announcement" only to be... nothing. Some even made jokes that The Winds of Winter won't be released while he's still living—because, come on, is he working on it at all anymore?
A user, @FLR11B ,served a roast, saying:
"EVERYONE GATHER AROUND I HAVE A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT...There will be no announcement."
A user, @VenomShaft, thinks:
"No one thinks this is coming out before he passes. I doubt he’s even working on it."
Another user, @sum5825, went on to say:
"Blah, blah, blah. Whatever, George."
Some users are joking that one day we’ll need an AI to finish The Winds of Winter for George R.R. Martin. Others think that in 10 years, he’ll admit he never really worked on it, and we’ll all be in some funny situation.
Posting a hilarious GIF, a user said:
"Enough is Enough George!"
A user, @ath33, speculated:
"We are going to need to depend on AI to finish the job."
Posting a Jon Snow pic, a user said:
"I’m tired."
A user, @johnnyjl96, mentioned:
"It’s gonna be funny when he finally opens up and admit he hasn’t written a single word since 10 years ago. He’s just abandoned it."
Perhaps some other writer will one day come in and finish it, and the conclusion will be something like Game of Thrones Season 8. And we'll all wonder why we waited so long.
