Tom Homan, a former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been appointed by Donald Trump as the new 'Border Czar' for his upcoming administration.

In a post on Truth Social account, Donald Trump made the announcement:

"I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders (“The Border Czar”), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security.

In the same post, Trump expressed strong confidence in Tom Homan's abilities to handle immigration enforcement, particularly border security and deportations. He praised Homan as the best person for the job by saying:

I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long awaited for job."

Homan’s appointment as 'Border Czar' comes as part of Trump’s efforts to strengthen his immigration policies, a mandate that is part of the upcoming administration.

Who is Tom Homan and why is Trump backing him?

Tom Homan, originally from northern New York, earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Jefferson Community College and a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Homan has had a distinguished career in law enforcement, starting as a police officer in 1984. He gradually advanced through various positions within the U.S. Border Patrol and ICE, a progression that he considers one of his proudest professional achievements. By 2017, he had been appointed to the role of ICE Director, becoming the first to rise through the ranks to this position.

In 2015, President Obama recognized Tom Homan’s exceptional leadership in immigration enforcement with the prestigious 'Distinguished Presidential Rank Award'.

Later, in 2018, the Trump administration honored him with the 'Distinguished Service Medal', acknowledging his transformative contributions to bettering U.S. homeland security.

In 2018, Tom Homan was also honored as 'Law Enforcement Person of the Year' by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), which represents over 26,000 federal officers.

The following year, in November 2019, Blue Magazine, a law enforcement publication, named him 'Man of the Year'. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to national security, President Trump awarded Homan the 'National Security Medal' in January 2020.

Tom Homan retired in 2018 and now runs Homeland Strategic Consulting while also being a sought-after speaker and author.

Known for his hardline stance on immigration, Tom Homan played a central role in shaping the controversial 'zero-toleration family separation' policy under the Trump administration. This policy led to the separation of thousands of migrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2018, a move that sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.

As 'Border Czar', 62-year-old Tom Homan is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Trump’s immigration policy, particularly regarding the enforcement of laws along the U.S.-Mexico border.

To sum up, Tom Homan's reappointment to a significant position in the Trump administration demonstrates the president-elect's ongoing dedication to implementing stringent immigration laws. As he assumes the position of Border Czar, his contentious past—particularly about the family separation policy—will undoubtedly continue to be a focal point.
