25-year-old Jaquez Myrick from Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested in connection with the early Sunday morning shooting on Tuskegee University’s campus following the school’s 100th homecoming celebration. Myrick was arrested as he attempted to leave the scene with an alleged handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device.
Myrick was only charged with the possession of a machine gun. However, he was not charged in connection to the death of the 18-year-old Latavion Johnson killed in the shooting.
The victim was not a student at Tuskegee University. The shooting also injured 16 people, 12 of whom sustained gunshot wounds.
Jaquez Myrick, a Montgomery Alabama resident, graduated from Success Unlimited Academy, a private, Christ-centered educational institution in Alabama in 2016, according to his Facebook profile. His connection to Tuskegee University is unclear.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Lt. Jeremy Burkett, on Sunday, November 10, 2024, gunfire erupted just after 1:30 a.m. at West Commons on-campus apartments in Tuskegee University located within Macon County after the homecoming celebrations.
Burkett said Special Agents responded to reports of multiple individuals shot on the campus of the University. Upon arrival, they found an 18-year-old dead at the scene. Authorities said of the 16 people hurt, twelve were injured by gunfire and transported to area hospitals in Montgomery and Lee counties. The remaining four victims sustained non-gunfire-related injuries. It is unclear how many of the injured were students at the University.
In a Facebook post, ALEA announced the arrest of Jaquez Myrick in connection to the shooting. The post read:
“On Sunday, Nov. 10, law enforcement officers found Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, in possession of a handgun with a machine gun conversion device. Myrick was found leaving the scene of the shooting that occurred on the campus of Tuskegee University. Myrick was arrested and charged federally with Possession of a Machine Gun.”
Jaquez Myrick is not facing murder charges currently as officials continue to investigate the incident. ALEA urged anyone with information to submit tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI and upload any digital files in connection to the shooting at fbi.gov/tuskegeeshooting24. Police said:

Social media videos captured the horrific scene as gunfire erupted on the university campus.
Meanwhile, the University cancelled all classes on Monday as law enforcement agents investigated the crime scene.
