Mob boss Sonny Corinthos has controlled the Northeastern Seafront for several decades. Despite being a criminal, he protects Port Charles with his strict policy of no drugs, no prostitution, and no guns, and is fiercely loyal to those he loves. That’s why it’s easy to see how beloved the character is among fans. His portrayer, Maurice Benard, recently opened up about what makes Sonny so popular.
Three decades and lots of love
Benard took to Instagram to post, “As I was figuring out what to write, all I can say is, when you’ve played a character for over 32 years, which is more than half my life, all I can think of is the generosity, love, and always my home away from home.🎁 @generalhospitalabc.”
Along with that was a video in which Benard stated, “You know, I can't believe that I quit this show when I first started General Hospital. And here I am, 32 years later. I always loved the character Sonny, and it's the people that have always been there for me here, always. So when you got that, when you got a character you love, and people you love that will…no matter what happens to you. And I've been through quite a lot. They're always there for you. You just got to be grateful. And appreciate every second of it.”
Bryan Craig, who played Sonny’s late son Morgan, simply applauded his former screen dad with, “👏👏👏.” Meanwhile, former The Young and the Restless star Doug Davidson shared, “👍👍👍😍😍.”
They worried it was a farewell

The number of fans that stated they loved Benard was incredible, with @honeygoldenkitty reacting, “I’m so glad you stayed with GH. I’ve been a fan of Sonny ever since he came to Port Charles, and a fan of yours since your Nico Kelly days on AMC. What you bring to the character of Sonny -- no one could do it better. ❤️.”
@missyjayy84 may have stirred up some controversy with the response, “Thank you for bringing Sonny to us for 32 years! No one better if you ask me❤️ but why does this feel like a goodbye 😢😢.” Other fans agreed with them as one speculated, “That’s what I said. Seems like a goodbye. Maybe they are filming something about Monica.” Monica, of course, was played by the late Leslie Charleson and her memorial episodes are slated to air sometime soon.
Noting that Benard was wearing a tuxedo, @daineharrison579 replied, “Looking sharp in your Tux 👏, taking this ride with you has been amazing-can’t wait to see more on GH.” And @msshay48 recalled that he’s a fave with the comment, “You are a great actor 👏👏👏👏! Started watching GH when I was in high school and you quickly became one of my favorites!!!”
