Sabato De Sarno has bowed out as creative director of Gucci. WWD reported that the luxury fashion house released a statement on February 6, 2025, announcing the end of its partnership with De Sarno as creative director.
Gucci further revealed that its upcoming Fall/Winter show will be spearheaded by its design studio. De Sarno’s creative director role with Gucci began in 2023. The designer is credited with popularizing the Gucci Ancora red. His debut show for the Italian fashion house embraced maximalism.
Stefano Cantino, CEO of Gucci, appreciated De Sarno's contribution to Gucci in a statement:
“I would like to express my deep gratitude to Sabato for his passion and dedication to Gucci. I sincerely appreciate how he honored Gucci’s craftsmanship and heritage with such commitment,”
Francesca Bellettini, Deputy CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company, added:
“I sincerely thank Sabato for his loyalty and professionalism. I am proud of the work that has been done to further strengthen Gucci’s fundamentals. Stefano and the new artistic direction will continue to build on this and guide Gucci toward renewed fashion leadership and sustainable growth."
More about Sabato De Sarno’s work as a designer and his achievements over the years
The Naples-born designer graduated from the Carlo Secoli Fashion Institute in Milan with a degree in fashion design and pattern making. He secured a job as an assistant pattern maker with Prada and worked with the illustrious brand until 2006.
In the same year he joined Dolce & Gabbana as the head designer of the Women’s Knitwear and Jersey collection. He moved on from there to Valentino where he took on several roles before he was appointed the fashion director overseeing both men’s and women’s collections.
In January 2023, Sabato De Sarno was appointed as the creative director of Gucci. He was tasked to define and express the house’s creative vision through the women’s, men’s, accessories, lifestyle, and leather goods collections.
Speaking on his appointment as the creative director for Gucci, Sabato De Sarno told Vogue Magazine in a January 2024 interview:
"I’m not a singer who became a creative director or an actor who became a creative director. I was a designer for 20 years. I have touched the clothes, I changed and modified them, I invented them. They have chosen someone who knows how to do this job—if you like it or not, that’s another story—but I surely know how to do this.”
Sabato De Sarno's departure from Gucci continues the recent trend of leadership change in the world of luxury fashion. In January 2025, Kim Jones exited Dior Homme as creative director. John Galliano left Maison Margiela in December 2024 while Hedi Slimane bowed out of Celine in October of the same year.
