The late basketball icon, Kobe Bryant, is getting a movie called With the 8th Pick. Warner Bros. has landed the project, as reported by industry scooper Jeff Sneider and also confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Writers Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen have given the screenplay for With the 8th Pick, which will focus on the 1996 NBA draft, which saw the beginning of a rising star. However, it will not solely be the journey of the basketballer but the entire process of the draft, which took place over a couple of weeks. American Sports Magazine Sports Illustrated called it the second-best draft, the best being the 1984 NBA draft.

With the 8th Pick is said to have elements from films including The Social Network (2010), Moneyball (2011), and Air (2023). These are the only available details on the upcoming movie. No director has been attached to it as of this writing.

Bryant is considered among the greatest and most influential players to have ever lived and spent his entire professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He made his debut for the team during the Summer Pro League, where he scored 25 points.

Celtics' then-general manager, Jon Volk, said of him after watching his game that,

"If you closed your eyes and thought a little bit, you might have thought you were watching Michael Jordan. He did everything well -- beyond well. He was exceptional in everything that he did. And then we commented, as I recall, on how reminiscent he was of Michael."

Kobe Bryant then went on to win five NBA championships throughout his career, and during this time, he was named an All-Star, an All-Star MVP, a member of the All-NBA Team, and more multiple times. Later on, he became a Hall of Famer a couple of times, in 2021 and 2025.

The NBA icon was on his way to see a basketball game with his daughter and six family friends in a helicopter. The weather was foggier than usual in the morning after a light rain.

It was around 9:40 A.M. when the helicopter was said to be climbing rapidly at a speed of around 300km/h. Just five minutes after that, it crashed. According to some witnesses, they heard the struggling helicopter before it was finally impacted.

Eight other people died other than him in the crash. Investigators cited blunt force trauma as the reason for their demise, as per ESPN. There wasn't any black box in the helicopter so which made the investigation for the case a bit difficult.

Several tributes were held for Kobe Bryant, including at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, 92nd Academy Awards, 2020 NBA Finals, and more.

Barack Obama, who served as the President of the United States from 2009 to 2017, wrote on Twitter (now X),

"Kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a second act. To lose Gianna is even more heartbreaking to us as parents. Michelle and I send love and prayers to Vanessa and the entire Bryant family on an unthinkable day."

Kobe Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to 2016.
