Yeison Jiménez’s sudden death in a plane crash on January 10 has sparked an interest in his personal life. The incident reportedly occurred near Paipa, in the Colombian state of Boyaca.

According to a report in Billboard, the crash claimed the lives of six people, including Jiménez and his manager, Jefferson Osorio. At the age of 34, Jiménez became a popular star in Colombian popular music, a genre that blends ranchera with Colombian roots.

Yeison Jiménez’s career spanned a decade marked by the composition of self-written hit tracks. He started performing at age seven and recorded his first song by the age of 14 while working in Bogotá's wholesale market.

Although Jiménez built a life with Sonia Restrepo and referred to her as his wife in interviews but they never formally married. They shared three children together - Thaliana, Camila and Santiago. Camila was initially from Sonia's previous relationship but was adopted by Jiménez. Sonia has stayed largely out of spotlight but continued to support her husband.

Inside Yeison Jiménez’s family as they cope with his tragic death

Yeison Jiménez is survived by his wife, Sonia Restrepo, and their three children. She is his longtime spouse and the family has often featured in family photos shared on social media.

He met his wife while performing in his home region of Caldas, a department in Colombia. At that time, Jiménez was just beginning his musical career. He was only 22 years old while Restrepo was 18 and was visiting his concert with her friends. Their friendship started with a playful tease after his performance which led to their date the next day.

The pair remained in a long-term relationship before they moved in together in Bogotá. Sonia had a daughter named Maria Camela from a previous relationship, whom Jiménez raised as his own by adopting her. They welcomed two children.

Their first child, their daughter Thaliana was born in 2018. They welcomed their second child, son Santiagoin 2024. Yeison Jiménez often credited his wife for helping him through challenges. Reportedly, the musician admitted toving been unfaithful to Restrepo on multiple occasions during their 12-year relationship.

Although they never had a formal wedding ceremony but Sonia was often refered to his esposa (Spanish for wife) in Colombian media reports. Some reports indicated that he planned a proposal in February 2023 in front of the Eiffel Tower. However, the plan never came through as the lights did not turn on that night. Their wedding which was also planned around the same time was postponed due to their son’s birth.

Yeison Jiménez’s sister Lina Jiménez shared a tribute for her brother on her Instagram Story. Sharing their last picture together, she shared a heartfelt note. The translate post read:

“I never thought this would be our last meeting, our last concert, the last photo. I love you, brother, I love you.”

Lina is the elder sister of the singer who has been a constant support throughout the beginning of his career. They shared a close bond as they often shared family events together.

Her Instagram posts describe her as a mother to her son Julian Jiménez whom she frequently calls “the love of her life” on social media. She is also the godmother of Thaliana.
