Marlee Matlin opened up about one of the darkest chapters in her life as she discussed her tumultuous and abusive relationship with the late actor William Hurt. He reportedly died in 2022 at the age of 71.
In her forthcoming documentary, Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, Matlin claimed that Hurt had a “habit of abuse,” as she reflected on the challenges she faced during their relationship.
Matlin also talked about how her mentor and the Happy Days star, Henry Winkler, helped her to overcome the aftermath of her abusive relationship with Hurt. According to Fox News, she lived with Winkler and his wife for two years following her breakup and recovery.
Marlee Matlin married her husband, Kevin Grandalski, in 1993. He is a police officer from Burbank, California. The couple shares four children - Sarah, Brandon, Tyler, and Isabelle. She met Grandalski in the early 1990s while filming the series Reasonable Doubts, where he was assigned to provide security on set, per People Magazine.

Marlee Matlin and her husband, Kevin Grandalski, started dating in the early 1990s. As the days passed, their relationship blossomed, and the two married on August 29, 1993, after dating for two years, according to a report in The List.
In a 2018 interview with Oregon Jewish Life, Matlin recalls how she was “hooked” when she saw her love for the first time. She joked it “must have been the uniform” that caught her attention.
Sharing more details about her partner, Marlee Matlin told the outlet:
“He’s not Jewish, but I believe that we can share both our beliefs in a household together. We celebrate both holidays, and we were married by both a rabbi and a priest on the front lawn at Henry Winkler’s house.”
She said that their kids were raised in an interfaith home, and so they allowed them to make their own religious decisions. She said that none of the children have had a bar or bat mitzvah, unlike her.
In 2017, she took to Instagram to write an appreciation post for her husband, who was a police officer, celebrating his career.
“Very proud wife of a retired police officer who just received his shadow box given by the Burbank Police Officers Association.”
Kevin Grandalski turned 60 this February. Matlin didn’t miss the opportunity to wish him on his birthday. She wrote in a post shared on February 13, 2025:
“Yup! Kevin, actually my hot looking husband, is celebrating his birthday today. ( 2-13, I am a day early because I am traveling and a Virgo, mind you ) It has been awesome celebrating him for the last 33 years and I look forward to another 33 plus years too.”
She added:
“Life with him and our four children plus a granddaughter has been nothing but a true blessing. Oh yeah…60 is just a number. I think.”
Matlin lost her hearing at the age of 18 months. She went on to pursue acting as her career. Some of her work credits include Bridge to Silence, Against Her Will: The Carrie Buck Story, Dead Silence, Freak City, Where the Truth Lies, and Sweet Nothing in My Ear.
