Men of War, the 2024 documentary about a failed military operation, will soon be released online. According to a Variety report, the film will be available on PVOD platforms from September 9.
Neon produced and financed this documentary, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, ahead of its CPH: DOX screening in Denmark, where the filmmaking duo of Billy Corben and Jen Gatien was nominated for a F: ACT Award. The film followed a group of mercenaries trying to overthrow a foreign government. The official synopsis reads,
"A former US Green Beret is recruited to remove Venezuela's president, and after the mission fails, he is pursued by the government he faithfully served."
TIFF refers to it as a tragicomedy with a pitch, "Rambo meets Fyre Fest," since it examines the deep political ties that were behind the said operation, leading the lives of dissidents on a risky mission without mitigating its consequences.
What is Men of War about? Exploring the details about the 2024 documentary

Men of War centers around a topic stranger than fiction, yet the TIFF description barely scratches the surface of what the documentary captures through its runtime. Here's the official summary, as per Rotten Tomatoes:
"In May 2020, just weeks after the Trump administration placed a $15 million bounty on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, approximately 60 Venezuelan dissidents, including two former U.S. Green Berets, attempted to reach Venezuela by boat in an effort to remove Maduro from power. Leading the mission was former Green Beret and private military contractor Jordan Goudreau, who branded himself as a real-life action hero and found himself at the center of an international political crisis."
Further, it reads as,
"Filming began within days of the failed coup, with unprecedented access to all sides of the story -- from exclusive prison recordings of retired Venezuelan General Cliver Alcalá Cordones to interviews with J.J. Rendón, strategist to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó. As the cameras rolled, the fallout spread across courtrooms and borders, with federal indictments, civil lawsuits, Interpol notices, and FBI surveillance."
In the year of the doc's release, Goudreau was charged with severe criminal charges, as per Variety, and is awaiting a verdict.
More details about Neon's Men of War documentary
Neon backed the 2024 documentary along with Deerjen, Rakontur, and Hyperobject. Before its TIFF premiere, Dan O’Meara from Neon revealed what appealed to her about Men of War.
“Every part of [Goudreau’s] project felt ill-conceived and impossible. They approached [Venezuela] by boat, and that boat broke down. There were also not that many guys involved. Everybody was wondering, ‘What were these guys thinking? How could they have thought that they were going to get away with this, and at whose behest?’ Jordan was made a laughingstock," O'Mears told Variety.
She continued,
"As it turns out, he was working for and had been hired by very powerful people in the Venezuelan opposition party, and he was in touch with the White House. Mike Pence’s people were giving [Goudreau] the tacit wink-wink like, ‘If this all works out, you will have our support.’ Jordan was also in touch with Keith Schiller, Trump’s former bodyguard. So, he believed at the time that he was undertaking a project that had the blessing of the Trump administration.”
As revealed earlier, Men of War will release online on PVOD platforms, starting September 9, 2025.
