The Fantastic Four: First Steps feels like a gift that keeps on giving. Months before its theatrical release, Entertainment Weekly has shared fresh looks into the retrofuturistic world of the First Family.
The four photos offer a peek into the looks of its four characters. It's fair to say that they feel time-appropriate for a film set in the 1960s. The outfit feels on point for Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm, who becomes the family's Invisible Woman. In the photo, she is seen wearing a textured jacket over a maroon turtleneck, holding some files. One of them is related to the Fantastic Four.
Another photo shows her with her brother, Johnny (Joseph Quinn), and her husband, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal). After their space mission, Reed becomes Mister Fantastic, and Johnny becomes Human Torch. The photo shows Sue, wearing another retro hairband, hugging her brother while Reed stands aside and smiles. Even here, their hairdo and the costumes feel on point, with Reed in a dark, robe-like jacket while Sue wears a full-sleeved red shirt.
The next two images show two Fantastic Four icons in their heroic suits. One of them shows two men helping Ebon Moss-Bachrach' Ben Grimm put on his space suit as he gets ready for his mission. It is likely before he becomes gigantic The Thing. The next photo shows Reed Richards in his Mister Fantastic suit, apprehensively looking at a screen.
The rest of the images offer a glimpse into the drama between these four family members. One of them shows Reed guiding Johnny about something important while they stand in front of the Fantastic Four suits. Johnny looks confused, while Reed looks concerned.
The next image shows Johnny holding a notepad in the middle of scattered notes and music records. It feels like a significant moment of discovery for him. Then, the last image shows all these heroes as astronauts before they embark on their space mission and long before they gain their superpowers. As their official post states, they seem "ready for a take off."
The Fantastic Four: First Steps: Matt Shakman's film is as if "Kirby meets Kubrick"
The Fantastic Four: First Steps becomes the most recent shot at bringing these formative Marvel heroes to the screen. The past four attempts at Fantastic Four movies were not the box office smash hits that the MCU is known for. So, Matt Shakman's latest film becomes another hope, not just for this massive cinematic universe, but also for the Fantastic Four fans who want to see these heroes on screen.
The latest photos from The Fantastic Four: First Steps offer a glimpse into its fusion of the 1960s on our Earth, along with futuristic inventions. It makes the film look otherworldly, as intended by the comics' co-creator Jack Kirby. The film takes place in an alternate universe and dons the fashion prevalent in the mid-20th century.
For this retro-futuristic look, Matt Shakman reportedly embraced a "Kirby meets Kubrick" approach. He was inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and his vision of the future. In line with this, Shakman told Entertainment Weekly,
"We knew that we'd be on another Earth, so we had a chance to reinvent what the '60s looked like. I was really interested in imagining the Fantastic Four being astronauts. Instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin going to the moon, what if it was Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben who were really the first to go into outer space, the first to push those boundaries?"
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled to be released on July 25, 2025.
