Harry Potter has been one of the biggest movie franchises of the 2000s, which also introduced us to numerous talents that are among the best in the industry right now. Among them is Katie Leung, who joined the franchise in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and played the character of Cho Chang.

However, with instant fame also came some heartbreaking struggles for the Scottish actress as she was subjected to racist attacks online by fans of the franchise. Leung, who is set to appear in the highly anticipated drama, Bridgerton Season 4 on Netflix, recently opened up about the racism that she faced in an interview with The Guardian. The actress revealed that when she read the online hateful comments about herself, she 'didn't cope with it and became less-outgoing.' She said:

"I think it just sat with me, and it affected me in ways like, ‘Oh yeah, I made that decision because people were saying this about me.’ It probably made me less outgoing. I was very self-aware of what was coming out of my mouth."

More on this in our story.

Harry Potter star Katie Leung opens up about online racism

Katie Leung played the character of Cho Chang in the Harry Potter film series. She joined the cast in the fourth film and was part of the franchise throughout the last film. In The Guardian interview, the 38-year-old actress talked about instant fame and how it was 'overwhelming' from the beginning.

She also opened up about the unchecked racism she faced while working in the film series. She talked about how it made her 'self-aware' and also did not help her accept the successful career after being in one of the most popular film series, as she began thinking she did not deserve the career, and all of this might have been 'pure luck.' She further stated:

"For the longest time, I may have tried to make up for it, and overcompensate."

The Harry Potter star later on appeared in several acclaimed projects where she played Asian characters that gave her the opportunity to learn "more about the world and the injustices," but she also shared that sometimes the ethnicity-based casting was limiting for her as well, and stated:

"It’s one of these things where just because there weren’t many roles out there, I was incredibly grateful to be considered. A large part of that was me, again, giving myself a hard time, thinking I wasn’t deserving of anything."

Katie Leung will appear in Bridgerton Season 4 as Lady Araminta Gun, Sophie, played by Yerin Ha's stepmother. Season 4 of the Netflix regency romance drama will focus on Benedict and Sophie's 'Cinderella Love Story.' Along with the main cast members, Emma Naomi, Isabella Wei, Michelle Mao, and Hugh Sachs will also be joining the upcoming season of the Netflix series, which is set to premiere on January 29, 2026.
