Tron: Ares - Release date news, cast details and more about the Jared Leto starrer sci-fi film

The forthcoming Jared Leto-starrer sci-fi film Tron: Ares is scheduled to be released on 10th October, 2025.

A sequel to the 2010 film Tron: Legacy, this film is a part of the Tron film series. The first film in this franchise, Tron, was released back in 1982.

This film is helmed by director Joachim Rønning, who is known for his work in films and series including Kon-Tiki (2012), Marco Polo (2014-2016), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019).

The film is set in a setting where the worlds of AI and humans are going to meet. How that collision of the forces takes shape is what the story progresses into, as Ares, a digital program, has been transported to the human world.

The official plotline of the film goes as follows:

Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

When is Tron: Ares releasing?

Tron: Ares is slated to be released this year on 10th October, 2025.

In CinemaCon 2025, the trailer of the film, as well as the poster, were launched at the event. At the event, Jared Leto, who essays the role of Ares, expresses that in his younger days, he was "obsessed with Tron", as per reports at Deadline.

Reportedly, the production of the film had earlier faced some issues as it had some postponements to commence its shooting. It was during the year 2023, at the time of the SAF-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America Strikes.

What could be the plot of Tron: Ares?

Apart from the official logline, no plot details so far has been revealed so far by the makers.

As per Deadline, at the CinemaCon event, Jared Leto reminisced on the first Tron movie, and mentioned:

“The future felt it was right around the corner. It had everything I wanted from a movie — action, adventure and spandex — it took me to a world that I never knew,”

And he drew a connection with it to the upcoming film by stating:

“This movie will hit you right in the grid.”

The screenplay of Tron: Ares is penned by Jack Thorne and Jesse Wigutow.

Even though we do not know many details about the storyline, we certainly have some information about the filmmaker's approach to his storytelling. As per Deadline, Joachim Rønning talked about how this film shall be different than the previous Tron films, by mentioning:

“Emotions will always be something that I strive for, and this film will be more emotional, something I don’t think the franchise has had as much in previous Tron movies,”

He also added:

“Both of them are, in many ways, masterpieces, but what I’m trying to do is create an emotional experience so that’s always going to be front and center. I think that that’s something that I managed to do with this film.”
