The saddest scene of The Simpsons Movie, where Homer watches Marge's recorded tape
There is a scene in The Simpsons Movie that has left an indelible mark in the viewer's heart since its release. It is the scene where Homer plays the video tape that Marge has left behind for him to watch, and introspect.
Homer's negligence leads to a huge pollution issue in Springfield, and people of the city are really upset with him when they discover he is behind it. They are now set to kill Homer's family, and hence the Simpsons escape to Alaska. There is more havoc in store, as a series of events takes place in the city. The tape sequence follows, after Marge and the children leave Homer to fix the wrongs he has committed in Springfield.
The video, ironically, has been taped on the couple's wedding video. As Homer enters the room, he sees a tape lying on his bed with a sticky note that reads: "Play Me In VCR." As soon as he plays it, we witness a broken and heavyhearted Marge, who speaks as she lets her inner feelings known to Homer, as she leaves him. In the scene, Marge says:
"Okay. here goes. Homer live always stood up for you. When people point out your flaws I always say: 'Well. sometimes you have to stand back to appreciate a work of art'."
Upon which, Homer responds with a laugh, and says:
"Way back"
Marge's video tape continues as she speaks:
"Lately, what's keeping us together is my ability to overlook everything you do. And I overlook these things because... Well, that's the thing. I-I just don't know how to finish that sentence anymore. So I’m leaving with the kids to help Springfield and we're never coming back. And to prove to myself that this is the end I taped this over our wedding video. Goodbye. Homie."
Marge's eyes are brimming with tears as she finishes speaking. Just after the video is over, their wedding video from years ago plays. Homer and Marge look joyous and are filled with love, as we witness the couple dancing, holding and kissing each other. In the video, Marge even says "I love you" to Homer.
This sweet moment in the film leaves the viewer with a heavy feeling. Homer is completely alone now, having invited trouble for his family. Just as the video is over, a desperate Homer, filled with guilt, runs out of the house and calls for his family.
The entire scene of The Simpsons Movie is devastating for many fans, as we witness something so poignant in the lives of the couple.
