A caring husband and solace in a mansion, what more does a woman need after having a baby? There's a lot she needs, and that is what The Yellow Wallpaper is about. It's a psychological horror that explores a woman called Jane (Alexandra Loreth), who strives to explore more but can't, thanks to her 'caring' husband, John (Joe Mullins).

She is confined in a mansion, in a room, to be precise, with the yellow wallpaper and a metal gate being the only things to accompany her. However, there's another woman, as she believes, who is trapped inside the yellow wallpaper but it is not until the end that we see the mystery surrounding this unravel.

But that happens just before she kills herself. She has suffered a lot and it is time that she takes action that finally sets her free. And that is the only option she feels is left there.

How did Jane die in The Yellow Wallpaper?

We don't see Jane killing herself, but it's a suicide. At the end of the film, when her patriarchal husband enters her room, we see her feet hanging, and that is the moment we know that she finally set herself free from this torturing life.

It is established from the beginning that she is going through depression and her husband assures her that this house will make things better for her. There's a garden, and it's surrounded by greenery with picturesque views, something that's perfect for a vacation. However, the longer Jane stays there, the worse it gets for her.

Added to her husband's emphasis on her 'maternal talents' instead of creative ones, it makes things more depressing for her and the viewers. She also suspects that there's a foul odor coming from the wallpaper and that something is behind it. Though it's all mental, which we will discuss in a minute.

The most disturbing aspect of the film is her realizing that the baby is the root of all these problems and trying to bury the little boy alive. Though the film was met with negative reception from the critics, we can tell you that this sequence will stay and haunt you for days, so keep a comfort film handy.

The mystery figure behind the yellow wallpaper

The mystery surrounding the entity behind the yellow wallpaper is solved after Jane dies. It is none other than Jane herself. Though this is symbolic, as it shows that Jane was always trapped. It was all in her mind.

Interestingly, there's also a metal gate that she fails to open throughout the movie. But as soon as Jane dies, it opens automatically, which is also symbolic in a sense. The opened gate shows that Jane is finally free, though the mystery woman can be deemed as her soul, who is now trapped inside this room.

There's also a message hidden in the movie for the ones thinking they are 'caring' for their loved ones. The best kind of care you can give is to set them free and let them explore the world as they deem fit. Let them learn.
