The Old Guard 2 is finally here. This sequel had us all curious, especially after how wild things got in the first movie. We’ve got immortal warriors, centuries-old secrets, some great fight scenes, and, of course, Charlize Theron back as the fierce Andromache of Scythia.

Andy has been walking the earth for thousands of years. She is fighting to protect the world while also trying to make sense of this whole immortal situation.

Andy’s story keeps us hooked. But it’s Quynh who really gets us thinking this time. Quynh is complicated, and that’s what makes her so interesting. In the first movie, we barely got to scratch the surface. We only knew that Quynh was Andy’s old friend and partner. They were each other's ride or die for centuries until that whole horrible iron maiden situation happened.

But The Old Guard 2 gets deeper into Quynh’s story. And suddenly, it’s not so black and white. She is not a villain. But she's broken after what the world put her through and is probably operating in that messy, grey area.

Let’s get right into it.

At first, it totally feels like Quynh is a villain in The Old Guard 2.

The movie opens with her dramatic return. The Iron Maiden that held her captive under the sea for centuries is hauled up onto a boat. And behind her rescue is none other than Discord, played by the absolutely brilliant Uma Thurman.

Discord is the first Immortal. The original one who’s seen it all knows it all, including every messy, complicated relationship among the Immortals, especially the one between Quynh and Andy. That alone makes her terrifying. In the beginning, she's just this mysterious character. But Quynh looks like the one ready to cause havoc.

Quynh is complicated. After centuries trapped in that Iron Maiden, can anyone really expect her to come out singing Kumbaya? She’s furious. She feels betrayed by the world, by the Immortals, and most of all, by Andy, who was her ride-or-die partner. In her eyes, Andy left her to rot at the bottom of the ocean.

When she finds Booker, she wants to know if Andy even remembers her. And Booker tells her that Andy never stopped thinking about her.

Quynh, however, ends up joining hands with Discord. It makes sense because it was Discord who freed her. And Quynh is broken, lost, and looking for justice, or maybe just a way to unleash her pain. But Quynh isn’t the villain here.

Soon, Discord’s true nature comes to light towards the end of The Old Guard 2. The first Immortal isn’t immortal anymore. Somewhere along the way, Discord lost her powers, but she kept that hidden from everyone. It’s only during a combat with Andy that the truth comes out.

Quynh, badly hurt and bleeding, realizes she’s been played. Discord never cared about her. When Quynh lies injured, Discord leaves her behind without a second thought. She realizes Discord isn’t a savior. She’s not a friend.

At the end of The Old Guard 2, Quynh and Andy patch things up. Old wounds don’t heal overnight. But the two warriors suit up and are all ready to face a common enemy. With their team captured and taken away by Discord’s forces, the stage is set for the next movie in line. The final scenes show Andy and Quynh side by side, all determined to bring their family back.

Looks like The Old Guard 3 is going to be another hell of a ride.
