In the past two months, the DC Universe (DCU) has been firing on all cylinders as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 have both been released to commercial and critical acclaim. Both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 set up the basis of the multiverse, as both these projects use the QUC. And, some characters like Amanda Waller are still played by Viola Davis.
For the uninitiated, Davis made her debut as Waller in 2016's Suicide Squad, a commercially successful movie that was panned by both fans and critics. However, two characters were fan-favorites in the 2016 DCEU movie: Viola Davis' Waller and Robbie's Harley Quinn. Davis is confirmed to be a part of the newly built DCU, but Margot Robbie's status in the new DC Universe remains unconfirmed for now.
The Australian actress has been addressing the status of Quinn in the new universe in multiple interviews to promote her upcoming romantic fantasy movie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. One of the most recent ones is the one between Robbie and ScreenRant journalist Ash Crossan. She (Crossan) and the Harley Quinn actor discussed the chances of the latter returning as the psychotic antihero:
"No, I haven’t actually [been asked about Harley Quinn] yet [today]! She’d be a fun one to revisit too. She’s so fun to play."
What does her comment mean for the DCU?
In numerous ways, her comments are very similar to what James Gunn said in the August 13, 2025, Entertainment Weekly interview. When he was asked about the chances of Robbie's Harley returning in the DCU, the Peacemaker Season 2 showrunner and DC Studios Co-CEO responded that Harley Quinn's status in the new universe will be confirmed "down the line" and didn't expand any further.
Much like Davis, Margot Robbie made her debut in 2016's Suicide Squad, which was a part of the now-defunct DCEU that was established in 2013. Davis then went on to return as Amanda Waller in 2021's The Suicide Squad and 2022's Black Adam. After appearing in the Dwayne Johnson movie, Davis was incorporated into the DCU with the animated series, Creature Commandos.
Gunn revealed that while some parts of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 are canon, Black Adam and its events are not canon. While some might say that Robbie sharing the screen with Affleck's Batman might be a problem, it should be noted that Waller also met Bruce Wayne in the post-credit scene of 2016's Suicide Squad.
We can simply chalk that up to this version of Waller being in a different universe, and the same explanation applies to Robbie's Harley Quinn as well. It should also be noted that John Cena's Christopher Smith/Peacemaker and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn shared the screen in 2021's The Suicide Squad, which was directed by James Gunn.
Considering Peacemaker Season 2 is about Chris dealing with the repercussions of killing Rick Flag Jr. in the last act of 2021's The Suicide Squad, it only makes sense that Gunn brings back Robbie as Harley Quinn, considering 2020's Birds of Prey separated her from the rest of the DCEU already.
