Hollywood is currently bustling with who will take the mantle from Daniel Craig to become the next James Bond, and Helen Mirren is weighing in on the discussion. With stars like Glen Powell and Aaron Taylor-Johnson being the top picks for most speculations, there have also been conversations about whether the role should now go to a woman.

The character has been played by men throughout the franchise's history. But with the rise of gender bending portrayals, led by films like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and more, the discourse has been in effect, although Helen Mirren disagrees. Talking to Saga Magazine about her thoughts on a female James Bond, the actress says:

“I’m such a feminist. But you can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”

Helen Mirren was accompanied by Pierce Brosnan, who also held the character in the past, as he gave his best wishes to whoever picks up the character next, saying:

“Iiwish them well. I’m so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character…. I adore the world of James Bond. It’s been very good to me. It’s the gift that keeps giving. And I’m just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: ‘Show us what you’re going to do.'”

Helen Mirren's next role in The Thursday Murder Club

Helen Mirren is readying up for her next film, The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix, where she plays Elizabeth Best, a retired spy who lives in a retirement home and finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery alongside three other oddballs.

Joining Helen Mirren is a strong ensemble, led by Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie. The film is adapted from the novel by Richard Osman, and is a comedy mystery thriller. According to Netflix's Tudum:

"The film follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves caught in a real case."

The film is being directed by Chris Columbus, who describes the cast as one of the best he has worked with since the Harry Potter films. Talking about the premise, he stated:

“There’s a wonderful mystery at its core, so mystery fans will be very happy. But thematically it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder. They are facing their own demise, yet at the same time they are obsessed with studying cold cases. I fell in love thematically with that. It’s comedic, but it’s also very emotional.”

The Thursday Murder Club will be in theaters on August 28, 2025.
