As per a recent article by Deadline, actress Sally Struthers recently mourned the loss of director Rob Reiner and his wife. She told the publication:
“There are no words. This is beyond devastating and my heart is with their family."
Sally Struthers was married to William C. Rader from December 18, 1977, to January 18, 1983. She shares her daughter, Samantha Rader, with William. She played Gloria Stivic on the popular sitcom All in the Family.
Over the course of the show's eight seasons, Reiner appeared in 174 of its 202 episodes. Joey would be the son of Michael and Gloria. After their characters divorced, Struthers and Reiner departed the program in 1978.
For season 1, Sally Struthers played Gloria again in the 1982–1983 spinoff series Gloria, which focused on the character's life after divorce. Additionally, Struthers would feature in Archie Bunker's Place, the second All in the Family spinoff.
Reiner and Struthers came together to honor the show's originator, Norman Lear, during the January 2024 Emmys. At the time, Reiner remarked:
"Sally and I were part of a unique television family: not just the Bunkers, but Norman Lear's extended family." "Over the years, Norman united us and produced innovative television programs that portrayed real people who made us laugh, think, and feel."
According to Page Six, Sally Struthers said in an interview that her life changed completely after the success of All in the Family. Struthers told the outlet:
"It became apparent rather quickly that my life had completely turned upside down."
The 76-year-old actress claims that after going out to lunch at The Grove in Los Angeles with her on-screen spouse, Rob Reiner, "within two months, we couldn't do that anymore." Struthers claimed that when she attempted to explain to the audience that Rader was her real husband, they would not listen and insisted that she was wed to "Meathead." She says:
"People are so funny. They are like an old dog with a bone; they get an idea in their head."
The mother of one claims she is "grateful" for All in the Family despite the drawbacks of immediate popularity. She says:
"And because it keeps opening doors, the gratitude has grown over the years."
The actress added:
"I sound like I'm boasting. I'm not boasting. I'm always in disbelief."
Sally Struthers continued:
"I don't need to go to a theater audition. Parts are offered to me. "We want Sally to do this for us this year," people tell me over the phone. And that's because they are aware that my name fills seats and sells tickets."
Without the fame of All in the Family, that would not have been possible. I am, therefore, thankful every day. Sally Struthers is equally adored by her younger fan following for her portrayal of Babette Dell in Gilmore Girls.
