After its release last weekend, Ryan Coogler-directed Sinners received rave reviews and a promising opening at the box office. Amidst the film’s positive critical and commercial reception, a specific review from a social media influencer, Matthew Torres, recently went viral.
Torres is a Latino content creator, educator, screenwriter, and author with over 315.9K followers on TikTok and 129K followers on Instagram. The influencer is known for the content centered around comic books, TV shows, movies, reviews, and other pop culture-related videos while vouching for Latinx representation in media.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Matthew is a comic book writer for Black Sands Entertainment, a staff writer for Ad Astra Media, and a teacher. At the same time, he has also collaborated with companies like McDonald's, Disney, Sony, Paramount, Hulu, and more as a content creator. Per his Amazon page, the influencer has written seven books.
In a recently posted video on different platforms, Torres pointed out the similarities between Sinners and From Dusk till Dawn. The content creator praised the Michael B. Jordan starrer, claiming he loves the film. Matthew then pointed out the similarities between the characters and plot of both horror movies.
In his previous spoiler-free review, the content creator drew comparisons by claiming,
“Yes, this movie is great, it’s 5 out of 5, it’s a fantastic movie, but it’s literally just From Dusk till Dawn. Sinners is From Dusk till Dawn for Black folks.”
In his recent video on the 2025 supernatural horror film, Torres also criticized the director for not having enough Latino representation in the movie.

The Latino influencer pointed out the resemblance between the plot of Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld-starrer with the 1996 action horror. In his video, Matthew reaffirmed that the latest Warner Bros. Pictures offering and From Dusk till Dawn “have more than just a few things in common.”
After listing the things both films share, Torres added,
“I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here, because I follow people in the horror community. No one’s talking about this. It’s insane. There is one f***ing movie that Sinners owes everything to and it’s not f***ing Puss in Boot, it’s goddam From Dusk till Dawn.”
He further called out Ryan Coogler, director, writer, and co-producer of the film, and said,
“And like I’m not saying Nosferatu-Dracula, Sinners-From Dusk till Dawn, but I will say that Ryan Coogler needs to firmly address that he was inspired by a Latin American vampire movie. Because are owed our flowers.”
Matthew also criticized Ryan Coogler by stating that the film didn’t have Latino representation,
“You don’t put latinos in the movie and you steal from the biggest latino vampire movie? Come on, man, that’s a bad look.”
He also proclaimed how he still loved the movie but had to discuss its flaws. @VHSDVDBLURAY4K reposted the clip on X, which has received over 8.9M views as of this writing. At the same time, the common plot details were also noted by journalist Erik Kain in his review for Forbes.

Coincidentally, Ryan Coogler appeared on the Get Rec'd w/ Straw Hat Goofy podcast, where he acknowledged the similarities with From Dusk till Dawn while also adding how Salem’s Lot inspired him for the design of vampires.
Sinners, which was released on April 18, grossed around $61 million in its opening weekend. The fifth collaboration between Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan has also received praise from Pedro Pascal, Halle Bailey, LeBron James, Spike Lee, and more.
