More about Helen Mirren and her husband, Taylor Hackford
Helen Mirren met Taylor Hackford in 1985 when he directed her in White Nights, a musical drama.
Helen Mirren candidly spoke about how the lockdown impacted her relationship during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2022.
"For the first time in 30 odd years of marriage we sat at the table opposite each other and had dinner together every night for six months – it was fantastic, brilliant", said Helen.
Taylor Hackford began his career at KCET, a Los Angeles public television affiliate. At the beginning of his career, he wrote, produced, and directed investigative reports, music performances, and documentaries. He made his directorial debut in 1980 with The Idolmaker, starring Peter Gallagher and Ray Sharkey.
His debut dramatic film, Teenage Father, won him an Academy Award in 1979 for Best Live-Action Short Film.
Hackford's second movie, An Officer and a Gentleman, starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger, was a commercial and critical success in 1982. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and won Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song (Up Where We Belong) for Louis Gossett, Jr.
In 1996, Taylor discovered an unreleased documentary video that cinematographer Leon Gast had filmed during the iconic Muhammad Ali/George Foreman title fight in Zaire, Africa. After conducting fresh interviews with Spike Lee, George Plimpton, and Norman Mailer, Hackford put together the existing material to essentially create a brand-new movie called When We Were Kings, which took home the 1997 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
The Devil's Advocate (1999), a contemporary morality tale set in the world of New York's elite legal profession starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, was also directed by Hackford in 1998 and became a global smash.
