Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident at the age of 28. Several outlets have reported that his brother, Andre Silva, also perished in the wreck.

Silva, 26, was also a professional soccer player for the Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel. The accident reportedly took place in Zamora, Spain, and the two died at around 00:30 local time.

The regional fire department of Castille-Leon issued a statement confirming their demise on its website shortly after, reporting that the car, a Lamborghini, had caught on fire. Its tyres blew out as the men were overtaking another car, the Guardia Civil has revealed, per ABC News. Investigations into the same remain underway.

Diogo Jota leaves behind his wife, Rute Cardoso, whom he married just two weeks before his untimely demise. The two tied the knot on June 22, 2025, in an intimate ceremony. The footballer announced the news on his Instagram, with the following caption:

“June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”

The pair were high school sweethearts, having begun dating in 2013. Back then, Jota was not signed to Liverpool or the Portuguese national team. They have welcomed three kids over the years: Sons Dinis and Duarte, and a daughter. The couple got engaged in July 2022.

Cardoso has long maintained her privacy, though she occasionally offers fans a glimpse into her life with her late husband and their kids. As of this writing, she has yet to comment publicly on her husband's shocking demise.

Diogo Jota's life and legacy explored

In a statement, the Spanish officials have revealed:

"The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking."

Diogo Jota is credited with having won the English Premier League with Liverpool FC this season. He scored 6 goals across the 26 games he played. He had shifted from Wolverhampton Wanderers five years ago, and has since scored a total of 65 goals across 182 games.

He also played for Portugal as they came out on top against Spain in this year's Nations League in June.

"The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated," a statement from the organization reads.
"Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself. We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily."

The FPF has petitioned UEFA, which governs European Football, to hold a moment of silence ahead of Portugal's Women's Euros match against Spain, slated for this Thursday.
