Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, tragically lost their lives in a car accident. As per a BBC report, the accident took place on July 3, 2025, in Spain's Zamora Province after midnight.

According to Sky Sports News, Silva played with the Penafiel team in the second division, who played as an attacking midfielder.

Although Silva was initially with the Gondomar SC's youth team, he made a shift to FC Porto's youth team. In 2020, he joined Penafiel and became an important player on the team. Meanwhile, the Everton team expressed sorrow over the news, writing:

“Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this sad time.”

The two brothers were onboard a Lamborghini, which went off the road due to a tyre blowout. This happened when they tried to overtake another car. Their car caught fire, and the two lost their lives, as confirmed by various sources.

According to The Scotsman, a statement released by the emergency service authorities mentioned:

“The 112 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.”

It went on:

“A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire. 112 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.”

The statement said that an emergency team and medical professionals from a health center went to the place and confirmed their deaths. Diogo Jota was 28 while Andre Silva was 26.


How did the Portuguese Football Federation react to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva’s deaths?

The Portuguese Football Federation shared a statement on account of Jota and Silva’s deaths. The association mentioned that Diogo Jota played as many as 50 games for the national team. They remembered him as a nice person who was liked by everyone in the football community.

They shared their condolences with the near and dear ones of Diogo and Andre Silva, and the clubs they played for. The statement read:

“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, this morning in Spain.”

It went on:

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents an irreparable loss for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”

Manchester United paid tribute to the late footballer and his brother, writing:

“Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today’s heartbreaking news.”

Jota was a Liverpool player, and he was paid more than 41 million pounds at the time of signing. He recently tied the knot with his partner, Rute Cardoso. They shared three children.
