Singer Cher’s memoir, Cher: The Memoir Part One, is expected to be out today, November 19, 2024. In this first volume, she walks the readers through her turbulent childhood and how she found her voice in the music industry.
In an interview with The New York Times published on November 17, 2024, the singer gave insight into how she made the book a reality.
In the memoir, she mentioned being careful and considerate while writing about her children Elijah Skye Blue Allman and Chaz Bono. Chaz is transgender and the singer used his deadname ‘Chastity’ while writing about him. A note in the memoir read,
“In this memoir, I refer to my son Chaz as Chas, the name he went by during the years covered in this book. Chaz has granted his blessing for this usage. In the next volume, at the appropriate point, I will refer to my son as Chaz.”
Chaz Bono was born to the singer and her ex-husband Sonny Bono, who died at the age of 62 in a skiing accident. He began his transitioning process in 2008 before his 40th birthday and changed his name and gender legally in 2010.
He is a writer and an actor and according to DailyMail, the first transgender star to have appeared on Dancing With The Stars in 2011.
According to Page Six, Chaz Bono’s transition was not easy for Cher even though she has been an icon for the LGBTQ+ community. However, she believed that one cannot lose someone who is transitioning as they only get a different shape.
Cher said the first part of her memoir ‘exhausted’ her
In The New York Times interview piece, the singer revealed that the first part of the memoir took a toll on her leading to exhaustion. Editor Carrie Thornton pointed out that the decision to release a two-volume memoir was thought upon during the writing process.
While revisiting her memories was emotionally taxing, she acknowledged the importance of honesty while sharing the account.
Moreover, Thornton noted that dividing the memoir into two parts gave a sense of boldness. Recording the audiobook presented unique challenges due to Cher's dyslexia, making the process difficult. To overcome this, she worked alongside Tony-awardee Stephanie J. Block.
The interview piece revealed that Cher does not intend to read reviews of the memoir as she prefers having her story documented. The singer shared experiences with Hollywood royalty, recalling spending time with Liza Minnelli and Dean Martin’s daughters in her childhood.
Presently, the Goddess of Pop likes spending time with Alexander 'AE' Edwards, whom she met two years ago after noticing his diamond-studded teeth. Reflecting on her relationship, she said she breached a few rules, such as avoiding involvement with a younger man.
She expressed pride in her family, charitable efforts, and career achievements, including her Oscar win. Despite admitting to not knowing her own address or phone number, she remained grounded in her values, as she prioritized character and integrity over superficial matters.
