Julio César Chávez Jr. has been detained by ICE, days after his boxing bout with Jake Paul.
The Sun has reported that the son of the namesake boxing legend and former champion in his own right was arrested on a warrant. He was in Mexico at the time and is being accused of fostering connections with cartels, in addition to organized crime and trafficking arms.
As of this writing, he is being processed and will be extradited to Los Angeles for custody, the outlet had disclosed.
"The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today announced Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained prominent Mexican boxer and criminal illegal alien Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and is processing him for expedited removal from the United States," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement. "Chavez is a Mexican citizen who has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives."
In their statement on X, the U.S. authorities also revealed that the boxing legend is being investigated for his alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.
"This alleged Sinaloa Cartel affiliate has an outstanding arrest warrant in Mexico for suspected involvement in organized crime and the trafficking of weapons, ammunition, and explosives," the statement read.
Julio César Chávez Jr.'s legal struggles explored as his application to become a permanent resident gets denied:
ESPN has reported that Julio César Chávez Jr., who was born in Sinaloa, Mexico, was still in the United States following his Saturday fight with Jake Paul. The pair had a showdown in Anaheim, California. News of his arrest broke out on Thursday, July 3.
Marca has reported that Chavez now faces possible deportation back to Mexico, given a potential immigration predicament. According to The Wrap, he had come to the country in August 2023 with a tourist visa, which he overstayed.
It expired in February 2024, and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services promptly informed ICE about the same. At the time, per the outlet, he was dubbed “an egregious public safety threat," though he was able to come back to the States earlier this year.
The Sun has reported that he filed for Lawful Permanent Resident status in 2024, citing his marriage to a US citizen, but was denied on accusations of being linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.
His wife, Frida Muñoz, once dated infamous drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán's son, Édgar Guzmán López. They share a daughter, Frida Sofía Guzmán, making her Chávez Jr.'s stepdaughter and the granddaughter of the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
However, to date, there has been no confirmation that Julio César Chávez Jr. has been involved in the Guzmán family's transgressions. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has revealed that his application for permanent residency was flagged for fraudulent statements.
"It is shocking the previous administration flagged this criminal illegal alien as a public safety threat, but chose to not prioritize his removal and let him leave and come back into our country. Under President Trump, no one is above the law—including world-famous athletes. Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over."
