Days after Jonathan Joss was found dead in his San Antonio neighborhood, the man accused of killing the King of the Hill voice actor has maintained that he did not commit the crime.
Through his defense attorney, Nico LaHood, Sigfredo “Freddy” Ceja Alvarez has proclaimed his innocence.
“He’s being accused of something that he's completely innocent of,” LaHood said during an interview with KSAT 12, his first time commenting publicly on the matter.
The King of the Hill voice actor's husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, described the incident as a hate crime rooted in homophobia. LaHood categorically rejected the claim.
“This accusation of a hate crime is completely antithetical to his character, this has nothing to do with sexual orientation. This has to do with a very long time of torment in that neighborhood.” the attorney asserted.
LaHood also suggested the broader context had been overlooked.
“He’s not doing great, 'but' he has the support of his neighbors,” whom LaHood claimed had long witnessed troubling behavior from Joss.
“And other people know the real truth about the circumstances and the often dangerous behavior, unfortunately, of the deceased,” he added.
Defense claims the King of the Hill actor’s alleged killer was protecting himself
Attorney Nico LaHood stated that his client, Sigfredo “Freddy” Ceja Alvarez, acted in self-defense during the fatal encounter that left the King of the Hill actor, Jonathan Joss, dead.
In a report by KSAT 12, LaHood shared that:
“This was leading up, unfortunately, and, as you know, people in Texas have a right not to be a victim. You have a right to self-defense. You have a right to the defense of third persons legally and under the law, and we believe that applies here.”
Alvarez, who has yet to be indicted, is currently waiting for the legal process to progress. LaHood emphasized that his client remains grounded by faith and surrounded by a strong support system.
“He loves his family,” LaHood said.
“He’s secure in the truth, in what his intentions were and in what he’s been dealing with for a long time.” he added
Should a jury ultimately find him guilty of killing the King of the Hill actor, Alvarez could face a sentence of up to life in prison.
Hate crime allegation challenged in Jonathan Joss' shooting
According to a report from TMZ, former neighbors of the King of the Hill voice actor Jonathan Joss have spoken out following his tragic death, challenging claims made by his husband about the nature of the fatal incident.
After Joss was fatally shot in what his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, described as a hate-fueled attack, several neighbors stepped forward to dispute the idea that the shooting was motivated by homophobia. In a lengthy social media post, Gonzales had alleged that the shooter shouted “homophobic slurs” before pulling the trigger. But residents who lived nearby have offered a different account.
They claimed they never witnessed or heard any harassment aimed at the couple based on their relationship. Instead, they described Joss as a disruptive figure in the community, someone prone to unpredictable, aggressive behavior that had caused friction for years.
The neighbors said the late actor would often lash out during sudden outbursts, hurling insults at strangers and behaving erratically. His behaviour included banging pots and pans from his rooftop late at night. They noted that while he would occasionally apologize afterward, the cycle repeated itself many times.
Some residents speculated that the King of the Hill actor may have been suffering from a mental health crisis, and said they had tried to be understanding. However, they suggested that the man accused of killing him, Sigfredo “Freddy” Ceja Alvarez, may not have shared that patience.
Law enforcement authorities also indicated there was no clear evidence of a hate crime in their findings. As previously reported, Alvarez was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and held on a $200,000 bond after reportedly confessing to the shooting, according to the police report.
