"There is an incredible shot": 28 Years Later helmer Danny Boyle opens up about the 20-iPhone rig used for shooting certain sequences

28 Years Later is the third entry in the 28 Days Later franchise and it's slated to be released on June 20, 2025, by Sony Pictures. Danny Boyle is returning to the franchise as a director after 2002's 28 Days Later. Alex Garland has written the script and the film is produced by him, Boyle, Peter Rice, Bernie Bellew and Andrew Macdonald.

Recently, Boyle revealed that the team used 20 iPhones at once to shoot certain sequences in the film involving the zombies. He said,

"I never say this, but there is an incredible shot in the second half [of the film]."

Danny Boyle recently spoke to IGN and revealed that they used 20 iPhones all at once to shoot certain scenes in 28 Years Later. He said,

“We thought we’d benefit from the unease that the first firm created about the speed and velocity, the visceral [aspect] of the way the infected were depicted. If you’re on a widescreen format, they could be anywhere… you have to keep scanning, looking around for them, really."

Boyle said that he and his cinematographer, Anthony Dod Mantle, created special rigs for the iPhones in order to shoot some sequences. These rigs allowed eight, ten and even twenty phones at once. He said,

“One for eight cameras, which can be carried very easily by one person, one for 10 cameras, and one for 20. I never say this, but there is an incredible shot in the second half [of the film] where we use the 20-rig camera, and you’ll know it when you see it… It’s quite graphic but it’s a wonderful shot that uses that technique, and in a startling way that kind of kicks you into a new world rather than thinking you’ve seen it before.”

The director used this shooting technique to experiment with the element of time, and frequent editing to elevate tension:

“As it’s a horror movie, we use it for the violent scenes to emphasize their impact."

28 Years Later is the third entry in the franchise after 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). The makers shot the film simultaneously with another sequel titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
