Rian Johnson has had some of the best moments of his career, thanks to his Academy Award nominated mystery series Knives Out. As the director readies up for the franchise's third entry starring Daniel Craig again, he is also opening up about taking a break and working on a different project.

During Deadline’s Contenders London, Johnson opened up on his next project, and how it's healthy to embrace other projects for a change. Talking on stage, the director said,

“I’m writing right now, [but] it’s not one of these [Knives Out] films. It’s just something completely different, an original thing. I actually feel very energized after making this one [Wake Up Dead Man], but this is three in a row. It’s probably healthy to see other people.”

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the latest addition to Rian Johnson's twist-filled whodunit and as the third chapter in the franchise, it is already winning fans over. Daniel Craig is returning as the sharp-tongued southern sleuth Benoit Blanc. Johnson is writing and directing the film, which takes it's title from the iconic U2 song Wake Up Dead Man.

The director further opened up about the film and how it bears a closer resemblance to Agatha Christie'snovels, as he said,

“The reality of this movie, it has almost like a more traditional murder mystery structure. This is how most Agatha Christie books work, where in the first act you meet all the suspects, you meet the protagonist, who’s not the detective. Then the murder happens, and the detective shows up.”

This time, Blanc is drawn into a shadowy case centered around Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, a magnetic priest whose tight-knit congregation hides more than just devotion. When a mysterious death shakes the church, Blanc must untangle a web of lies, faith, and corruption. Josh Brolin stars as the domineering Wicks, with Glenn Close as his devout right-hand Martha Delacroix and Josh O’Connor as the conflicted young priest Rev. Jud Duplenticy.

Joining them are Mila Kunis as Police Chief Geraldine Scott, Jeremy Renner as Dr. Nat Sharp, Kerry Washington as lawyer Vera Draven, Andrew Scott as author Lee Ross, Cailee Spaeny as former cellist Simone Vivane, Daryl McCormack as politician Cy Draven, and Thomas Haden Church as groundskeeper Samson Holt. Supporting roles include Jeffrey Wright, Annie Hamilton, James Faulkner, Bridget Everett, Noah Segan, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

So far, the film has earned glowing reviews from critics and the audience, with many calling it the best film in the Knives Out trilogy. It is set to release in theaters on November 26, 2025, and will later be available for streaming on Netflix on December 12, 2025.
