Businesswoman and media personality Kim Kardashian evacuated her house in light of the LA fires. On January 14, 2024, she shared an Instagram story where a prison inmate, sentenced to 17 years, was seen sharing his experience with YouTuber Hasan Piker about working as a fireman during the LA fires.

Piker asked him whether he liked being out, to which he said it was better than being in prison. The inmate mentioned the potential risks in jail, like seeing others getting stabbed and assaulted. He noted that they were being well-treated in their present role.

He praised the community for showering love towards them, saying that was all they needed. Kim Kardashian’s post received reactions and comments from social media users:

“Prisoners or not they deserve better pay and treatment than this,” an online commentator noted.
“Won’t let him go home on good behavior but will let him work for free and be a slave bc it benefits a rich city. Hmm?” another person pointed out.
“So many people never received proper love so they looked for it in the streets and ended up in prison,” a netizen remarked.

Social media users applauded Kim Kardashian for using her platform to advocate for prisoners.

“say what y’all want about Kim but she’s using her platform for good,” a social media user commented.
“I don’t see other celebs advocating for prisoners like Kim…. That’s what’s up!” an internet user mentioned.

Kim Kardashian demanded higher pay for the inmate firefighters working to contain the LA fires

The businesswoman recently advocated for higher pay for the inmates working as firefighters during the LA fires. In an Instagram story posted on January 11, 2025, she expressed gratitude to the individuals and said they must be given higher wages.

Kim Kardashian acknowledged the hundreds of individuals risking their lives working 24-hour shifts to protect communities, often for very low pay. Despite their heroic efforts, their compensation has not increased in decades, even as fires have become more dangerous.

She highlighted the low pay of incarcerated firefighters in California, who have been earning $1 an hour to fight dangerous wildfires, a rate unchanged since 1984. Kim Kardashian urged Governor Gavin Newsom to increase their pay, noting that past pay increase proposals were rejected at the last moment.

She also emphasized the importance of initiatives allowing formerly incarcerated firefighters to reduce their sentences, clear their records, and pursue well-paying jobs in fire departments after their release. These programs, supported by the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, help reintegrate them into society while continuing to serve their communities.

According to The Los Angeles Times, incarcerated firefighters comprise about 30% of the state’s annual wildfire-fighting force. Reports show they earn as little as $26.90 for a 24-hour shift. Over 900 incarcerated firefighters have recently been on the front lines battling wildfires in Southern California.
