Actor Rainn Wilson desires to play the character of Plastic Man. On August 16, he attended a Fan Expo in Chicago, where he shared that he had made a few suggestions to director James Gunn about the character. The actor said that as he was growing up, he would watch Plastic Man.

According to Entertainment Weekly, he spoke about the character, saying:

“He had a wicked sense of humor. The Plastic Man comics were very, very funny. That would be a fun one to unearth. I would be a fan even if I wasn't in it I would love to watch that... And play him.”

Meanwhile, social media users did not seem pleased by the idea. An X user commented:

“N-no. Because Plastic Man needs to be played by Ben Schwartz.”

A netizen wrote that although Rainn Wilson could get the role, he would not be the best fit:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the role, but he’s a little too old.”

Some said the chances of Wilson getting the role are higher, as James Gunn could hire him. A platform user commented:

“This is most likely to happen, since James Gunn likes to hire actors he’s previously worked with.”

However, an X user explained Gunn’s perception of the character, speculating:

“Honestly I can see it. Rainn has that perfect mix of awkward, unhinged, and hilarious that Plastic Man needs. If James Gunn actually greenlights this it could end up being one of the most inspired castings in the DCU.”

Another netizen opined that Hartley Sawyer could be a good fit for the role:

“Hartley Sawyer from the CW flash would work well too.”

How Rainn Wilson got the role in James Gunn’s Super

In 2010, Rainn Wilson acted in James Gunn’s action movie, Super. During a conversation with Fandango in 2011, Gunn was asked what took him so long to get the film out. He explained that he had the money to make the movie about five years earlier, but it took him a long time to find the right main actor.

James Gunn mentioned that many Hollywood actors were interested, but he needed someone who looked strong enough to be tough, yet also had a funny, awkward look that made it believable he could be picked on. The actor also had to handle both serious and funny scenes well.

A few years later, his ex-wife, Jenna Fischer, suggested Rainn Wilson, and Gunn immediately felt he was the perfect choice. Sharing his thoughts about it, Wilson said:

“When, you know, Jenna Fischer, you know, Pam, from The Office, you know kind of put the ball into motion, I called James I was like, ‘I love this script.’ I went to my agents and I was like, ‘I need to make this movie. I have to do it and we have to get this done,’ and it really was hitting the pavement it really was like trudging down to financing houses and producers offices and say here's our script.”

At the time of the interview, Rainn Wilson shared that about two to two and a half years earlier, the economy went down badly, due to which, independent movies struggled a lot.
