Republican Rep. Nancy Mace and Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett got into a heated argument at the House Oversight Committee meeting, which took place in Washington, D.C., on January 14, 2025.
At the meeting, Crockett was voicing her motion to reintroduce the Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, which had been disbanded. During her argument, though, she said, as a figure of speech:
"And child, listen."
However, Nancy Mace took offense, at which point she began arguing with her:
"I am no child. Do not call me a child. I am no child. Don't even start. I am a grown woman. I am 47 years old. I have broken more glass ceilings than you ever have," Mace said. "You will not do that. I am not a child. I am not a child. If you want to take it outside, we can do that."
Footage of the same has since been doing the rounds online, and truly, users have been picking sides. While some feel like Crockett should have maintained a more professional demeanor in her speaking, others felt like Mace was acting exactly like a child, despite arguing that she wasn't one.
Here's what one user said, for example, referring to Mace's threat:
"Nancy wouldn’t make it back inside I fear."
The comments didn't end there, as scores online were ostensibly teeming with opinions:
"Says “I’m not a child” immediately throws a tantrum and starts acting like a child," one user opined.
"so basically yt woman gets mad over something she mad up in her head," another echoed.
"okay but if it were the other way around, rep. crockett would be scrutinized by everyone and be called ghetto," someone else opined.
"Looks like jasmine needs a class on how to talk in a professional setting, this is embarrassing for both," one user suggested.
The video drew the reactions of many, most of which bordered on ridicule at both women's behavior:
"she crashed out over being called a child and her saying “we can take it outside” was so corny," someone pointed out.
"Wait, hold up, did Nancy Mace really throw down with, Let’s take it outside? And all because someone said chile..Like, relax, no one was actually calling you a kid! Congress is officially wild. Forget debates, they’re ready to square up like it’s a reality TV showdown. What even is happening anymore," another stated.
'"If you want to take it outside we can do that" unprofessional and disgusting,' one user opined.
"We’re both Americans but we’re speaking two different versions of English lmmfaooo!!!!" yet another asserted.
While users were generally displeased with how both women acted, several did point out that Jasmine Crockett was likely speaking African American Vernacular English (AAVE), which is a dialect predominantly used by African Americans and a few Black Canadians.
Jasmine Crockett calls Nancy Mace an "attention seeking loser," says the only things she can hit are "fundraising goals"
During the meeting on Tuesday, Crockett was speaking directly to Nancy Mace, as she said:
"I can see that somebody's campaign coffers really are struggling right now, so she gonna keep saying 'trans, trans, trans' so that people will feel threatened."
It was then that she used the term "child," to which Nancy Mace reacted with anger. Despite House Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer, repeatedly banging his gavel to ensure there was order in the room, the two women continued to argue as they spoke over each other.
Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost moved to strike Mace's "take it outside" comment from the record, though Comer denied this request, citing that Mace was not challenging Crockett to a duel.
The latter has since taken to X to issue a lengthy statement, where she referred to Nancy Mace as "an attention seeking loser who clearly has some fundraising goals to hit… and to be clear that is the only thing that she will hit…"
In return, Nancy Mace also took to her professional account on X, where she affirmed that she was not going to fight with Crockett. "I’m no child. And if I wanted a physical fight, you’d know it. That’s not what this was," she wrote.
