Jason Momoa's upcoming role as Garrett Garrison in the highly awaited A Minecraft Movie has created considerable buzz among fans. The actor, known for his diverse set of roles and broad genres, is portraying an old has-been successful gamer, who is one of the main protagonists in the film alongside Jack Black.
In the pixelated world of Minecraft, Garrett now owns a video game store, and the character is labeled as a 'loser' by Momoa himself. In a conversation with ELLE, the actor opens up on his character, describing his inner persona as he says,

"He found fame at a very young age, and he's just stayed stuck in that time. When we meet him in the film, he's this burnout, but he's got a kind heart. He just covers it up with arrogance and what he thinks is charm. He thinks he's this tough, macho guy who's a loner, but really, he wants to be with someone, he wants to be a part of a pack, and he finds his pack in this movie."
Talking about Garrett's relationship with Black's Steve, Momoa adds,
“I think Garrett and Steve are very much alike, and there’s a little stiff competition between them. But he finds a kindred soul in Steve and in Henry too. By the end of this movie, it’s almost as though Garrett has been through therapy. He goes through a lot, and you get to see a bunch of different sides of him.”

Presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures along with Mojang Studios, the film brings the iconic aspects of Minecraft to life as fans get to explore the game in all its live-action glory with all the right additions from the game that took the world by storm since its release. Besides Momoa and Black, the film stars Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen.
Talks for the project started in 2014 when Mojang Studios announced it was in talks with Warner Bros. for a film inspired by the video game. Since then, the cast and crew have been developing, with multiple creative geniuses joining and leaving the team. In 2022, Warner Bros. officially announced the project, along with everyone who is involved in it.
The plot synopsis of A Minecraft Movie reads,
"A mysterious portal pulls four misfits into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master the terrain while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected crafter named Steve."
The film is being directed by Jared Hess and written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta.
A Minecraft Movie is set to release on April 4, 2025.
