Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett has expressed her wish to step away from acting and the silver screen, as she aspires to pursue different things with her life. The Australian actor and producer came to international prominence for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I in the period drama Elizabeth (1998) and has since received multiple accolades for her work.
However, this wouldn’t be the first time the actress has shared about giving up acting. While promoting her show on Radio Time, she surprised her fans yet again, sharing that she is
“serious about giving up acting.”
She conveyed that she is still not totally comfortable with being a celebrity. Cate Blanchett shared,
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. (There are) a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
She shared her thoughts and experience of being a celebrity and explained her dislike for words pulled out of context.
“When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicised, they sound really loud. I’m not that person. I make more sense in motion — it’s been a long time to remotely get comfortable with the idea of being photographed.”
The 55-year-old actress stated,
“I’ve spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable.”
Cate Blanchett's love affair with acting

Blanchett has struggled with her on-again, off-again romance with acting for more than 30 years. In a Vanity Fair interview published February 13, 2023, she explained her feelings
“On a daily or weekly basis, for sure. It’s a love affair, isn’t it? So you do fall in and out of love with it, and you have to be seduced back into it.”
Cate Blanchett sat down with Julia Roberts for Interview magazine in February 2019 as she opened up about the less glamorous sides of her work.
She explained that as one gets older, acting gets more and more humiliating. Blanchett then continued telling Roberts, when she was younger, she used to contemplate why the older actors she admired kept talking about quitting acting. After years, she now understands their want to quit acting, as it’s their way to maintain a connection to the last shreds of their sanity.
She mentioned
“As I get older, I ask myself if I still want to submit myself to the shamanistic end of this profession and go completely into madness. It’s the King Lear end of the spectrum of what we do, right? So I’m on the proverbial couch thinking, ‘Do I want to go that direction, or do I actually want to live a life?’”
Following her acclaimed performances, Cate Blanchett portrayed Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and took on a role in the 2018 film Ocean’s 8.
Her contributions to the performing arts also extend to the stage, where she has acted in various theater productions. From 2008 to 2013, she co-directed the Sydney Theatre Company with her husband, Andrew Upton, who remained in the position until 2015.
