According to a recent article in Deadline, actress Kim Cattrall, popular as Samantha Jones in HBO's Sex and The City, turned down the role four times due to "self-inflicted ageism" over being 41 in a sexually confident role, before finally accepting it.
The article states that KIm Cattrall, while explaining to The Times what convinced her to say yes for the role, said that 40 became s*xy and she decided to go for it.
“Well, that changed — 40 became s*xy. It became, ‘Man, let’s have more of that,” Kim Cattrall said.
Kim Cattrall further explained that her hesitation was due to being completely opposite from Samantha Jones character's sketch in real life.
“But I’m the antithesis of her [Samantha] in many ways. I’m a serial monogamist, and then some,” she explained.
While many thought of Samantha as a nymph*maniac, Kim Cattrall explained that her protagonist was a woman who preferred to live on her own terms.
“She wasn’t a nymph*maniac — well, some people might have thought she was — but she was just enjoying the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on the appetisers when she was going for the steak. And it was always on her terms — that I always insisted on,” said Cattrall.
Kim Cattrall's assertions arrive at a time when the third season of the popular HBO series And Just Like That... started airing on May 29. And Just Like That... is a spin-off of Sex and The City.
After being vocal about the behind-the-scenes differences with her co-star Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall decided to re-unite with her Sex and The City co-stars Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Parker in the spin-off And Just Like That..., in a small guest appearance.
According to Candace Bushnell's New York Column, the series Sex and The City ran on HBO from 1998 to 2004 for six years. In 2008 and 2010, two feature films of the franchise were also released in theatres. A CW prequel series The Carrie Diaries was released in 2013-2014.
