“I am so glad we were all together”— Sarah Michelle Gellar celebrates Shannen Doherty’s birthday one year after death

Sarah Michelle Gellar paid tribute to her friend and late actress Shannen Doherty on what would have been her 54th birthday on April 12 this year. Honoring the tradition of celebrating their birthdays together, Gellar also shared throwback pictures and videos accompanied by a heartfelt message for her late friend. She shared how glad she was that they 'were all together on this day the previous year.'

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shannen Doherty were long-time friends. Gellar is popular for her roles in the series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and films such as Cruel Intentions and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Doherty is known for her work in shows such as Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210. On July 13, 2024, Shannen Doherty passed away after a long battle with cancer.

On April 12, 2025, Sarah Michelle Gellar posted a picture on her Instagram page of herself and Doherty celebrating their birthdays together, as well as a throwback video of Doherty. The caption said:

For as long as I can remember, we have celebrated our birthdays together @theshando. This year I will keep that tradition, and celebrate you. I am so glad we were all together on this day last year, not knowing it would be the last like this. Happy Birthday Shannen. 🕊️.”

Other friends and colleagues of Shannen also paid tributes to the late actress on their social media. Among them was Rose McGowen, who shared a fan post wishing the late actress on her Instagram story with the caption:

"You are missed, you are loved @theshando"

Shannen Doherty and Sarah Michelle Gellar's Friendship

According to Entertainment Tonight, Gellar and Doherty met each other when they were working on their respective shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. They have been friends for about 30 years.

In an old Entertainment Tonight exclusive interview featuring Doherty and Gellar, Doherty said:

"It's so nice for me to have a female friend that feels no threat, no jealousy. We have never felt that with each other. We've done nothing but lift each other up and support each other in our careers and champion one another."

According to ET, Gellar has been supportive of Doherty throughout her cancer battle and also helped the latter decide to reprise her role in the reboot of 90210. The support was always two-way as the duo recalled.

"To have someone that believes in me the way you do when I don't believe in myself and that shows me how to fight for the things that are important to me(...) to have someone that I know loves me for me, I'm very lucky," Gellar said about Doherty, as cited by Entertainment Tonight.

In July 2024, when Doherty passed away after a years-long battle with cancer, Sarah Michelle Gellar paid a tribute to her friend on her Instagram. In the caption of the post, she shared her love and respect for Doherty. She also urged people to help out local animal shelters to honor Doherty, who loved animals.
