English actress Alex Kingston, well-known for her roles in ER and Chasing Shadows, among other works, shared her journey with uterine cancer in an exclusive interview with The Independent, published on October 10. According to The Mirror, the 62-year-old actress was married three times in her life. She was in a relationship with actor Ralph Fiennes for almost a decade, following which they tied the knot in 1993.

Their marriage lasted for three years, and their divorce was finalized in 1997. Alex then married Florian Haertel in 1999, and they parted ways in 2009. In 2015, she married Jonathan Stamp.

Alex Kingston’s cancer diagnosis came through in 2024, but this was the first time she spoke about it in an interview. She said:

“I had a major operation. I had to have a hysterectomy, I had to go into radiation therapy, and that took up a huge part of my life.”

Discussing the early signs of her disease, Alex Kingston said she was feeling a certain way 18 months ago, but thought it was due to her age. Looking back, she said:

“I never went down the cancer road in my head. It was a shock, because I have a very positive outlook on life in general. Even though my body was telling me there was something very seriously wrong, I kept thinking, ‘Oh, I’ve got a bad UTI or fibroids.’”

Alex Kingston shared that while she was at Chichester Festival in 2024, she had a bleed on the dais. She said:

“I just knocked my knees together and prayed that it would soak everything up.”

Alex Kingston said that even though dealing with cancer was hard and took a lot of strength to face the treatments, she started feeling like herself again right after the surgery. She also realized that she hadn’t felt that way in many years. Stressing the importance of check-ups, she said:

“Womb cancer is really tricky because it is so sneaky. What I would say is, the body does know – and that was the body saying to me, ‘Help! There’s something really wrong.’ It’s so important to seek advice and have a check-up.”

She said that after her diagnosis, her way of thinking changed because she stopped worrying about unimportant things. She realized that looks or getting roles meant for younger people didn’t matter anymore, as there were far more important things in life. Speaking about why she had a thin presence on social media, Alex Kingston said:

“I like to keep my own life private. In a sense, you can take the power out of cancel culture if you don’t actually join in. You don’t have to engage. You’ll actually have a much simpler life.”

However, she said that many actors felt pressure because casting teams often chose people with lots of social media followers. She wanted to get roles for her skill and talent, not for her popularity, and she refused to follow that trend.
